It has been often said that a good melody is one that can stand alone from accompaniment. What are all of yous opinions? :?:

I feel a good melody should be able to stand on it's own without any accompaniment, or additional arrangements.

My opinion is that you will somehow say that everyone is wrong because of the jerpy ditt-dittly poup.

A good hamburger patty can be eaten on its own, but a bun, ketchup and mustard make it even better.

Icecream is good but a banana split is better.

By whom?

Chords, counterpoint and harmonies are all intrinsic parts to Western music.
The finest piece of music I know, Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" would sound very meh with only the melody. In fact, the melody is the least significant part.
Or for newer music, imagine The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" without accompaniment?
Or...

Oh maaaaan, that was painful. That may be an argument that the melody SHOULD be able to stand alone.

I think it's completely subjective. It depends on the style of music, your cultural background etc. Also what you think of as a "good" melody. There are hundreds, if not not thousands, of melodies which I like that I'm sure other people would say completely sucked. And vice versa. And when you consider how heavily music of a western heritage relies on harmony, well let's just say that it becomes a very complicated and subjective question.

I think each element is equally important to create a memorable song. But I wouldn't necessarily agree that a good, stand alone melody could make up for a lack of decent lyrics or structure. However, there are any number of cases in which a song became memorable and popular because of the structure and lyrics but had an absolutely austere melody line...case in point "A Horse With No Name".

If a song/melody sounds good with just one simple guitar as accompaniment , it is a good one- IMHO

Maybe someone can help me on this.

I think the quote goes like this . . . the lyrics are the vehicle that carry the melody . . . or the other way around.

The way I see it, the human voice is just another instrument. You don't need it for all tunes, but when used right, it's as beautiful as any other instrument.
Certainly, many of my favorite pieces of music are instrumentals. They're not just to give the singer a much needed pause, but can often stand on their own legs.
And a couple of my faves have no melody either - Arne Nordheim's "The Tempest", for example (one of Frank Zappa's favorites too). Same with a lot of movie music, which is made to steer the mood. It's not for everyone, but neither is any other genre.
