I would like to share this interesting story that took place in Houston, Texas.

It was the late 70's and I was in the 3rd grade. Star Wars was the latest craze.
I was excited to bring my new Star Wars figure for "show & tell"

But before I could show my stuff 1st. . . this girl went before me and she had memorabilia from her uncles band.

As a hip 3rd grader, I thought her uncle looked like a total geek from the ancient black and white pictures she showed us. (not as vibrant as my Star Wars toy) I remembered her uncle had thick rimmed and dorky looking glasses. She brought several of his records and his guitar picks too.

Sad to say, her uncle died in a very tragic plane accident. I remember she said there was a famous Mexican man on that plane too. In my early teen years, I found out who that man was. Her uncle died before she was born.

I have to admit, the class was impressed. By the time it was my turn to come up and show off my new Darth Vader action figure, the class interest died down and most of the kids were not paying attention to me. I was hurt and sad.

And to this day I will never ever forget this girls name. It was Kristen Holly. Her uncle was Buddy Holly.

Yes....and lets not forget Waylon Jennings was suppose to be on that flight too.

Now that I am older now, I see the relevance of these great rock icons.

A poignant anecdote that highlights what's really important in life.

Better planes? More impressive Star Wars figurines?

Thanks . . . with all those famous people on the plane . . . it was know as the day music died.

Such important people in our Rock & Roll evolution. I wish I was mature to understand that in the 3rd grade, but I guess my focus was elsewhere.

Before I read the last paragraph - dorky looking glasses, died in a plane accident.. I immediately thought of him :( Every day, it's a gettin' closer.

The music show, the "Winter Dance Party" that Buddy Holly was flying to perform at when he died, was still held. Buddy Holly's replacement was a group called the Shadows. The 15 year old lead singer was Bobby Vee. This tragedy gave Bobby Vee a launching pad for a very successful music career.

My Grandfather went to college in Lubbock at the same time that Buddy Holly was playing in roller rinks and places like that in the area. My Dad was a huge Buddy Holly fan growing up, and he was really sad that my Grandfather never saw Buddy Holly play (or even knew who he was). My Dad went to college in Lubbock at the same time Stevie Ray Vaughan played up there before Texas Flood came out. Even though my Dad was aware of him, he never went to see him played. And of course, I was pretty upset at him for not doing that! So the moral of the story is, if I ever go to college in Lubbock I will go see every Strat wielding guitar player around so that my kids won't get mad at me!

Interesting that that happened in Houston. I met a cousin of Buddy Holly's here once. But it didn't snap that they were related until someone told me after the fact.
