I bought an Ovation in the mid '80's and I still have it. It's been a mixed bag for me.
I like the neck. The tone works for what I do.
I hate that the battery is in the sound hole and I have to loosen the strings to change the battery. The body shape can be annoying, even when wearing a strap.
It replaced a nice Yamaha that had been stolen. I paid nearly three times for the Ovation, what I had paid for the Yamaha. That only bothers me everytime I have to change the battery.

I read this on another site about three days ago. I'm not surprised by much anymore.

I bought my first Ovation in 1980, a Custom Balladeer for $1,000 and the custom case cost another $350 - it took me a full year to pay everything off. I still have the guitar and love it, but it's worth too much to drag around to the bars anymore. I have two other Ovation guitars that I use when I play out, both of them have the shallow bowl and I love them AND the sound I get from them. These both have outside access to the battery, much easier (and smarter) than the older Ovations.

I am glad that I already have my Ovations, though I may look around for another before they completely cease to exist (new) in the local stores.

Personally I've never cared for the sound of those guitars at all. But then I have yet to hear any acoustic electric that really sounded inviting to me. They all have that "Purpose Driven" worship team sound.

I recall Ovations seemed to be very popular during the early 1970's.

... which is precisely where the UK economy has been for a long time now. My parents' generation built ships and bridges and steam turbines and generators that were the envy of the world. My kids will probably get jobs in call centres and sell each other insurance.

The one thing I've noticed about Fender, unlike Gibson, is they seem to shut down and shelve just about every company they buy out. Sunn, Tacoma, Genz Benz, are a few examples. Gibson still has Steinberger, Kramer, and whatever else going after they bought them years later. I suppose it's a good way to get rid of competition and become a monopoly. Classic corporate strategy. I suppose they can use the excuse of not selling, which might be true, but it seems Gibson didn't have any trouble keeping these brands going, and they were even targeted by the current government in charge. Who knows, maybe Gibson is just lucky at it? :P

And those early ovations were so great to play.
After they started mass production the quality dropped a LOT!

When I see (and oftentimes, hear) a plugged-in Ovation, I am usually taken back to the days of pretty boys with big hair and spandex. There's usually a power ballad, a chorus pedal and some overblown finger tapping solo involved as well.

I hate all of the above things.

Some people can use those instruments to good effect--but I have the sneaky suspicion that they would sound good playing almost anything.

However, I feel for the guys/gals who are losing their jobs.

+1 to all of this.

We have a local cat who is an excellent artist and does mainly solo acoustic stuff now, but still does band projects here and there. He was using an Ovation for awhile and made it sound really good. He's got a beautiful Guild now and it sounds even better. I know he wants to get a vintage Hummingbird at somepoint. The reality is he could probably pick up something at a garage sale and kill with it.

That being said, I don't think I'd dig that body shape. I can see them as being one of those kinds of things where you either like it and can work with it. Or you just don't.

Keep in mind that this is not just about Ovation. They just go first.
Fender announced that they will shut down all other operations in New Hartford too, at yet-to-be-announced dates. This includes the Fender Acoustic Custom Shop.

Which is a real shame. Someday I really wanted to get one of those CS Acoustic Antiguas. Though, obviously a CS P bass comes first. Bummer.

Get it before they close that shop too.
