I put an amp on layaway yesterday. I know I'm fresh off my H&K purchase, but it was just too interesting to pass up. The tone coming out of it is freakishly freakish. The dynamics are insane. To make a bad sound come out of it would be the real challenge.

But no freaking reverb...

Am I the only one who hates that? It drives me nuts when I run across amps with no reverb. To me, it's the only flaw this amp has.

But, for this one, I made the exception. As if I needed another amp. It's just mesmerizing to play it. I couldn't REALLY open it up and pick a fight with it in the store, and I'll have to wait for it. But I'm highly anticipating it. In the meantime, I need some suggestions on a good reverb pedal. I've never had to buy one before. I'm not looking for a $400 crazy unit. Something maybe in the $100-150 range.

I forgot to take pics of the amp in the store, but I did find a pic on the net.

This is a pic of the actual amp. It has 4-el34s, 4-shielded 12ax7s, cooling fan, 2-mercury transformers, a Vintage 30 and a Jensen Jet Alnico 12. That's all I can really tell you from what I saw in the back. I'm guessing what's inside the chassis is pretty nice based on the sounds of it. I just couldn't pass this up.

I know, lack of reverb is definitely annoying to me! I don't really like the way my reverb pedal affects my tone, so when I play through an amp with no reverb I usually up the delay just a little bit more than usual to give myself a little bit more sustain.

But seriously, that is a really cool amp you've got there! I don't think I've ever seen one before. Congrats on your find! :D

The other day at the store I A/B'd the TC Hall Of Fame and the Boss RV-5. To my ear the TC sounded a lot more hi-fidelity. The boss sounded like it had a blanket over it by comparison.

I don't think there is any substitution for a real spring reverb, but for 150 bucks the TC might work for you.

Congrats on the new amp!

Yea, I don't see a need to get real crazy with reverb for live shows. The intricacies get lost in the mix anyway. For recording, studios seem to be using plugins more often than not. I have good rack mount reverb for home use if the pedal isn't doin' it for me.

For live shows, a decent pedal should be fine. I just feel a little out of the loop in that department these days. But I will give the TC a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

I like the Hard Wire reverb pedal. It sounds good. Has several different reverb sounds.

Like you, I struggle to like an amp that doesn't have reverb. Back when I was shopping for a little tube rig, I had to pass on the Marshall and a couple others because they did not offer reverb. I settled, happily, on the Bugera V5 5W. It had better options and it had a nice built-in reverb.

You're probably not the only one, but I can only speak for myself, and I do not want reverb in my amps. I like the toolbox approach, where each tool does one job, and one job well. If I want reverb, I use a reverb pedal (or, earlier, tank), which can be taken completely out when I don't want reverb.
Most amps with reverb color the tone even with reverb all the way to zero - it's an active circuit.

My first two amps had no reverb (actually, the first one's reverb tank was broken and the second one had no reverb at all)...and I actually love the sound of a dry, un-reverbed signal.

Having said that, I understand the attraction of a feed reverb effect.

The above suggestion of the TC Hall of Fame is pretty good--I have heard that stompboxes used to a good end result.

I'd love to see a blind test where guitar players have to choose which is a 'real' amp reverb, and which is a pedal. I'm guessing some of us give our ears too much credit for being able to tell the difference.

It is convenient to have the reverb on the amp (one less pedal to carry) but external pedals can be a little more flexible, offering different types of reverbs and allowing for a little more granular control.

I always have either reverb, or slapback/reverb on. I like these for medium priced effects: http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetai ... ductId=424

Love my (indestructible) Boss stomp boxes. This one looks interesting, although I've never tried one out:

JAH...Time to invest in a Fender Tube '63 Reverb Unit! Then you'll never be without some of the best reverb in the world...good enough for Dick Dale, good enough for the rest of the planet!

I'm suspecting that's more to the reason this amp doesn't have one. There is literally no information on this amp on the net at all. The intrigue for me really is "what does this amp look like on the inside?" I'm betting it's hand wired, based on a vintage amp (no telling which one), and full of great parts.

I guess I figured if this is one of those opportunities to own a really good clone of some vintage amp there's no way I'd ever be able to afford, then it's worth a shot getting it at a reasonable price. Even if it's unique in its circuitry, and not a clone, I can tell by what's being used for the transformers and speakers, and the mounted cooling fan, shielded preamp sockets, that this amp was built with great care. It sounds great, looks to be reliable, and has that rare amp vibe to it.

What is a Heidkamp amp? What's inside it? What's the design? Reverb or not, I HAVE to know. It's one of those opportunities to own a custom amp that for the moment is very rare. How could I walk away from that?

Thanks for the replies on the pedals. I'll get one at some point. There are good points made for having a pedal considering being able to have different kinds running through it. I do like the idea of that.

I have the TC Electronic Hall of Fame, or rather, the Trinity, which is the same pedal but black and with two of the effects changed out. One of the two is like a helicopter effect, and pretty meh.
But the other is like a huge cave, and really really nice. Unfortunately, most of the other presets sound somewhat digital. The spring reverb is a good copy of spring reverb - I can't really tell the difference, but I am the oddball who doesn't like spring reverb, and want all reverb to be of the ambient/reflection type.
The Earthquaker Devices "Ghost Echo" is another pedal that I think sounds darn good.
Yeah, you definitely want to try different pedals out. There are a lot of them out there.

And congrats on your amp. I'm envious. A sound clip will be nice :)
