Great performance and a great recording!

This is for me the best version of "Sultans of Swing".
I was 16 years old and full of illusions when I saw this show in 1978 and I still have the emotion the review!
The sound of Strat ... and fingers MK!

isdi, when I glanced at your location, I thought it said Suds Quest.
Then I thought, 'Wow, must be near the Alsace area.'

Yes, MK is mighty.

I'm on the other side, just in front of the U.S. Atlantic coast of France!

Hi isdi, thanks for the link. I'd never seen that particular show before: Knopfler's guitar is sounding better there than on several of the other early TV recordings, so that's nice.

The first Straits album is what made me think I might like to pick up a guitar, and Sultans is the first number I ever learned to play. So I've enjoyed this little jaunt down memory lane! :)

Cheers - C

The Dire Straits first entered into my consciousness with "Money For Nothing"...that riff still rocks my booty off!

When I later heard Sultans of Swing, I was equally knocked out--I didn't have any idea what to call it, but I knew it was dang good.

Very easy on the ears. I can appreciate a drummer who understands when less is more.

I already loved the sound of D. Gilmour!
That day, I discovered the SOUND Strat that haunts me and I do not get tired!
Happy to share this moment of emotion!

Great video! Thanks. He really gives that Strat a twang, just like it should sound in that venue.
I'm with "Screamin Armadillo", the first thing I thought of was "Money for nothin'..." when I began watching that video.

Stevie Ray Vaughan sold me on a Strat the first time I heard him play. His passion as he played & the riffs he chose as he played his "number one" just amazed me (And still do). He made it look so simple & so much fun! His passion was so contagious when he played. He really drew you in to his element. That matching of Stevie & a Strat just can't be improved upon. It was a perfect match!

Always liked Dire Straits and especially Sultans of Swing. Some years back, I played with a guy who loved to do the guitar solos (Sultans of Swing) and did an excellent job, too.

We never got a highly favorable reaction from the audience....always meh, UNLESS there was a guitar player in the audience! So we quit doing it. Guess it takes someone with a good understanding of the guitar to fully appreciate MK's talent.

In 1978, in France alone disco was "fashionable" and Dire Straits was a real UFO here.
The presenter Patrice Blanc-Francard confessed in the "Rock & Folk" magazine, the audience danced and cameramen no longer obeyed the director of the show, it had more than the fingers of MK, with music and the feeling.
Usually the public but was filmed that day, all the instructions were not followed, thankfully!
Hence this video or fingers MK are highlighted on "Sultans of Swing".
