I went to pick up a few extra E strings, 10's. They were sold out. They had 9's and 9.5's. i had no idea 9.5 even existed.

I kept going back and forth between 9's and 10's. I've been using the 9.5's for about 6 months. They're a nice compromise in feel and they sound good. They seem to be pretty popular, because my local store sells out of them pretty often.

What? Yoda, you're supposed to be all knowing?

I hadn't seen them either, I am going to have to give em try because 9's cans be too light sometimes, and as I have gotten older the 10's are a bit harder to bend and hold finger vibrato with...thanks!

I can't remember where I heard this but I seem to recall that the degree of accuracy with regard to string gauge is approximately +/- 0.0004". That's off the top of my head. The actual number might be slightly different but I think that's right.

What that would mean in practice is that 9s could be anywhere from 0.0086" to 0.0094" and still be within tolerance. Theoretically a 9 could be as thick as 0.0094" and a 9.5 could be as thin as 0.0091". It's possible a set of 9.5s could be actually thinner than a set of 9s.

I think at one time back in the day the tolerance spec was looser and the variance could be as much as +/- 0.0006".

This is the reason many companies don't and won't make half sizes. Or so I have been told, anyway. Again, I can't remember where I learned this. It wasn't that long ago, I don't think. Couple years maybe. It might be beneficial to look into that before deciding one way or another.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I don't recall ever seeing that gauge, either. Learn something new everyday, I suppose.

I've been buying the D'Addario XL 9.5 Nickel Wound at the Sherman Oaks GC. Several times that they have been out I was told that Joe Walsh comes in and buys what ever they have in stock. So I guess he likes them.

I don't know if I can tell anything with a replacement string. Maybe I'll have to try a full set.

I remember them being called "half steps" or something like that several years/decades ago. I still like Pyramids.

I've been using 9.5s for quite a few years now; I love them. 9s were too small, and 10s seemed a touch too big. I was using DR Tite Fit for years, but lately I've been using the D'Addarios.

Yeah, back in the days of the board's limited hours and closed on weekends. Much has happened in these past (almost) 7 years.

I used 11's and 10's for years--then I moved down to 9's and life was better...now I'm using Rev Willy's Mexican Lottery strings (in the 9 gauge set), on everything except my G&L F-100 (which seems to prefer heavier strings, [i.e. 10's] for some reason) and I'm very happy.

I might put some 9.5's on my G&L, just for giggles...I don't know if it would make any difference.

I've started varying the string gauge with the neck radius - the smaller the radius, the thinner strings. Thus I have 12s on my Select Tele HH with a 9.5-14" radius, and James Bond strings on my 7.25" radius Tele Thinline 72 RI.
This works great for me (so probably not at all for many others).

.0095s seem like a good idea, but I don't think Ernie Ball make half-number gauges.
