Hey guys, I'm looking at this Am. standard jazz bass on Ebay.

It looks pretty nice, but when I looked closer down at the end of the fretboard it appears as if the G string is floating dangerously close to the edge of the board, while the E string is pretty far inwards. I'm not sure if this is due to camera angle or not, but if it wasn't, would it be easy to correct or would it require work? Should I request a better image from the seller?

Nothing wrong , just need a neck alignment by loosening the 3 or 4 neck bolts and realigned neck to have string parallel to neck side .

Itsa happened often with any bolt on neck guitar and bass .

Not a huge deal as noted above however i would make sure the neck pocket is not overly loose or this will be a continued problem. It also maybe just the photo angle.

I think that's just the angle the photo was taken at. Look at the angle of the door, if the bass is parallel to the door then it's just normal parallax error and nothing to worry about. I'd probably still ask for more pictures though, explain your concerns and get the seller to provide a full frontal shot.

tbazzone, GilgaFrank ,

You could be right a photo is a....photo . You never see a neck need this adjustment ?

But this neck adjustment is well know and you can see often in many Fender bass and guitar. And neck pocket is never so thight you could not fix it .

If it just that , TheMaxwell could buy it .

Normally, you'd want slightly more fretboard edge on the bass side, because most players do push bends also for the A string, and because the E string vibrates much wider, and you don't want it to hit your sliding thumb as it vibrates.

That said, the picture does appear to be at a slight angle too, making the difference look bigger than it probably is.

I've seen it on my own partscaster and had to correct it! It's not difficult to fix if the neck is skewed, loosen the bolts off, move the neck as you tighten it back on. A ten minute job really.

Thanks for the help guys. I sent the seller a message, though I've never seen this on any guitar I've owned. If it is a regular occurrence I guess I shouldn't be surprised though.

Though, I am a little apprehensive of removing the neck of nice instruments.

Removing a neck isn't such a big deal. Strings off, unfasten the bolts carefully, make sure you turn each one a little then turn the next one, don't let tension all be supported by a single bolt or you may strip the wood. Same principle when you tighten it back up, get it roughly in position then tighten the all bolts a little at a time and the neck will settle right where you want it.

Having said that, I really think it's a matter of angles on the photo. I just took a look at my Jazz Bass from a side angle and it's easy to make the neck look misaligned.

I would also check the bridge and the notches, before I pulled the neck,,

Take measurements first...

So, I tried the aforementioned alignment instructions on my squier jazz and it seemed to go fine, the only unsettling thing though was that when I brought it back up to pitch, I heard some popping noises. Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

You do not need to remove the neck , please read my first answer ;

1- Just loosen the bolts ,( loosen strings before not too much , you need them to see if the neck is straight )

2- Pull the neck straight , tighten the bolts

This job is easy if you have a help first time , one guy hold the neck , other thight the bolts

Absolutely normal, just the wood settling into a new position.

My American Deluxe Strat gets a chiropractic adjustment occasionally. The little 'e' gets too close to the edge, so I hold the guitar with the bottom edge facing me, hold the small bout with one hand and push on the head with the other. There's an audible pop, and after re-tuning, all is well.
I'd be more concerned about a used instument still having the stickers and tags on it.
