I had the bright idea to put some kind of quick connection at the jack wires of a partscaster I'm contemplating. That way I could change out loaded pickguards with no soldering.
I checked StewMac and Allparts and neither of them had one, which surprised me.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this not a good idea?
I figure a small screw block would work, if not an actual male/female connection.

Hi Drew: male to female "spade connectors" are probably the tool for this job, I'd have thought. I can't work out how to link an image using my phone or I'd post you a photo. But Google spade connector and you'll find plenty of pictures and plenty of suppliers. I don't think the likes of Stew-Mac sell them, but any friendly-neighbourhood electronics store will give you what you need.

If you like swapping parts in and out a fair bit it's a nice way to go. Do your soldering just once.

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri, I guess my brain wanted to complicate it more than that.

If you use the spade lug connectors make sure you get the one's that are insulated, you don't want them shorting out. I found some connecters at Radio Shack that I use. :)

Hey Drew: haha - not over-complicated in the slightest. You called it a bright idea and it is. In a perfect world guitar makers would all agree on a universal standard and then all pickups and other parts would come with compatible connectors on the ends of their wires and we could swap things in and out much more easily.

EMG have gone a little way towards that goal, but I expect their connectors are not the ones others might choose.

Meantime, at least hooking the output jack to the rest of the harness with connectors like you're suggesting is a good starting point. Makes switching out whole pickguards a cinch. :)

Cheers - C

My recommendation is to use Molex Picoblade 5-pin connectors - that way you're compatible with Gibson headered pickups that already come with connectors. (Well, the newer ones anyhow.)

There's a dizzying array of options. For the output jack I only need a 2 pin. I've found a couple of options. I'll post a link when I find the best price.

What gauge wire would I expect to find on a Strat output jack?
I'm thinking of ordering these which work with 18 - 22g wire. They don't say the actual overall dimensions, but I'm hoping they aren't too large.
