It seems that the production of Winged C tubes has come to an end. The SED factory has closed and Winged C tubes are now considered NOS tubes!

There ARE factory seconds out there that got sold cheaply to stores, among the good-quality ones that stores and online-stores have bought. So be careful when ordering Winged C's from stores if you're planning to order them!

Good thing i have some good sets on my shelf. The good ones retails for 60$ each on thetubestore.com and the factory seconds go for 35-40$ at dougstubes.com .
Dougstubes.com even changed the description to this!"Due to material changes and poor test results, we will no longer be carrying winged =C= tubes."

Thetubestore.com carries the "good ones", as they refused to purchase the factory seconds at a lower cost. Great choice, thetubestore!

By the way, i am in no way affiliated with thetubestore. Reading what i just wrote.

Did you like the Winged C's? How do you feel that they are discontinued?

Expansive is a good thing - I have a feeling you wanted to say expensive, though.
Yeah, they are; I have found the same exact tubes for half other places. The testing they do add to the value, but doubling the price?

Yea, that sucks. I loved them in my Mesa DR.

Here's my personal thoughts on power tubes.

There are still a lot of good tubes available. I had a choice between buying SED el34s or Gold Lion kt77s, and I chose to give the Gold Lions a try in the H&K. I wanted to help boost some bass in the amp with them. I'd have to say, I am impressed with them.

I like to go all out with the preamp tubes. And it seems to be that when I do that, the margin of differences between other good brands of power tubes really isn't a whole lot. The margin of differences between preamp tubes is pretty broad. Before I bought the Gold Lions, I beefed up the preamp section, and even the Ruby el34's sounded fine. They were just at the end of their life.

I'm not exactly sure that the Gold Lions gave the amp more Bass, but they did round off the highs to a sweeter tone.

This news didn't bum me out too much. It does suck because I do like SEDS, but there are others I'd like to try anyway. Later, I'd like to see how the amp responds to some PSVANE treasures or Phillips.

I've been looking for more evidence that Winged =C= production has stopped and I can't see any.

tubestore.com say they believe it's stopped but then they're in the business of bumping up tube prices. No mention of it even on diyaudio.com and those guys and girls know tubes so well they can tell you absolutely everything about tubes and have contacts all round the world in the tube manufacturing business. So I'm not saying the OP's information is wrong, just that I can't see any evidence to support it. Even a search for the manufacturer's name JSC Svetlana turns up nothing.

Or as they say on wikipedia, [citation needed] and [questionable source]. Don't start panic buying just yet.

This from http://www.wingedc.com/ ...

Rest assured that the Svetlana factory in St. Petersburg, Russia is still producing vacuum tubes and has no plans to stop.

Rather vague, no way to contact them directly, and suppliers seem to agree that they aren't making 6L6 and EL34 and other tubes used for instrument amps. All existing evidence is that the tubes that we all care about are not being produced presently in St Petersburg. I've read other stories that they have no or little supply of the materials needed for the 6L6, EL34, etc. :?:
