I keep breaking the high E string. Does the nut slot look crooked or at an angle?

I take it the strings keep breaking at the nut? Hard to tell the angle even with a pic.

Is that a plastic nut? Probably badly cut or sharp, put some graphite from pencil on it or get a bone or graphite nut.

I had a similar issue...I don't know what caused it but I know how to remedy the situation until you get a new nut.

Loosen that string and slide a small piece of paper into the nut so it covers the inside of string slot. I hope that makes sense, basically have the piece of paper covering all contact points from that string and nut. The tension will hold the piece of paper in place.

When I saw this post, I feared it would be NSFW.

Have you by any chance gone from thinner strings to thicker? It looks like there may be some digging down that might pinch a thicker E string.
Anyhow, nothing a luthier shouldn't be able to fix quickly. Or add some nut sauce or graphite.

i am not sure what came stock on the guitar, but I had the shop change them to 10's before I picked it up.
I'll try the graphite or nut sauce. it just looks like it was cut in a bit of an angle to me.

You could file that slot... get it nice and smooth... or...
You may wish to just replace that nut with a better quality.
Tusq is good... or perhaps a decent synthetic bone nut.

We should have a thread where we all post pics of our nuts.

Hi Yoda: just another little suggestion. Run a bit of dental floss back and forth through that nut slot a few times, just in case there's a stray partical in there, or a sharp edge somewhere. You don't want to be going at it hard enough to change the shape of the slot, but just smooth things out a touch. A minute's work, it won't do any harm, and sometimes it can make all the difference.

For what it's worth, from the photo the slot does look slightly skew-whiff to my eye. As if it's angling a little too far towards the middle of the headstock as it travels upwards. Though that shouldn't be enough to make strings break.

Oh, and it is likely that Epi came stock with 10s, so I doubt string gauge is an issue.

Good luck - C

Put a strait edge (6in plastic ruler) in the nut slot and see if it lines up with the inside edge of the tuner post. That might give you an idea if the angle is too extreme and causing the problem. It does look like the nut slot is at an angle, but maybe it is supposed to be that way?

Thanks for the tips guys.
Ceri, when I noticed the angle, a ran my thumbnail through it and a bit of excess plastic came out. I'll try out the floss, but I think it has been cleaned out.
