And, sad news folks....on one side, you're going to want a bulletproof case for that guitar (I've got a Gator for my HWY 1) but on the downside, you're still going to have to check it. I've seen hippies drag their acoustics on the plane with gig bags...but would you really want to have your guitar knocked around by people and their stupid carry-ons?

Some advice?

1. Detune the strings a little. Trust me, 20-3000 feet of elevation and the severe temperature changes can whack out your guitar. The airport will ask you if you've detuned the strings on it. They ask this for a reason...

2. If you can? Ship it! No, I'm not kidding. After freaking out because my luggage was lost/late, I decided to ship it overnight on the way back. My guitar was waiting for me! (I even paid insurance and had it marked as fragile.)

3. Get a "travel guitar". I don't know how long you're going to be gone or what it is you'll be doing, but one thing you might want to look into is a travel guitar, ie, a guitar where if something gets dinged, or broken, it's not going to break your heart. Squier guitars....good stuff.....and it's great stuff if you're a frequent flyer.

4. Oh yeah...on the case....get one you can lock after it's been checked by TSA. Stuff happens.

The bottom line? Airports and guitars do not mix. There is no good failsafe way to guarantee that luggage handlers will handle your guitar like you do...or that it will get missplaced and will sit on a tarmac (outdoors either in blistering heat or freezing cold and rain) for hours on end. It happens.[/i]

+1 for Shipping it! I shipped it from Virginia to California so I wouldn't have to hang out in buss stations with it. (After stopping in Pitssburg I was sure it was the right way to go).

Thanks for that!

..The reason I can't take the travel guitar option is because I'm planning on getting a guitar in the States to bring back, hopefully if I go around Christmas.

...I was thinking about shipping it over, but I don't know how reliable that is...I mean, what if the shipper looses is or tries to return it to sender, when there is nobody to return it to.

...And if I ship it over with the proper price written on the box (in case they loose it, to claim), I'll have to pay 700 USD custom duty.

...Ahh!..eventually, I'll figure it out. lol

My expeiances when travelling by air when transferring in the service was very lucky; I heard stories about the handlers at Honolulu Itnt. saying the handelers took theguitars out of the cases and fooled around whith them..
I took all my axes on the plane; taped shut and locked; everything arrived ok but that was in 1981.
Nowadays if I take a guitar I check the case (if I can't get the steward to put it in !st class) and after removing the neck I carry my strat in my carry-on body and neck seperate.
So no I don't take my set necks when traveling and my days of moving around are almost done; I have one more and that will be via truck. Me driving most likely.

I took a guitar on a plane just one time. I waited forever for the thing to come on to the carousel but it never did! After some anxious moments I discovered a rack nearby where they put golf clubs and similar pieces of luggage and there it was. I thought someone had stolen it.

If you've got a few bucks, the new Fender cases have TSA approved locks.
