Hey people.

This is something I've always wondered, and I'd love it if anyone can help me out. I have this problemo. When I listen to my favourite artists live, they never seem to have an issue of volume when they're in the high frets doing solos (clean).

My problem is, I've got the power and the volume down at the bottom of the neck, but when I scale to the next octave I just lose my volume. I know there are volume boost pedals and stuff but I like to keep my pedals to a minimum.

One thing is, I used guage 9 strings because I love the ease of bending - reckon that could be it?

I also have a compressor pedal and they're designed to bring the volume up on the lows - is there a specific way to use them? I.e. on the effects loop, straight to input etc.

Any help would be really really appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not an expert on this, but it could be the fact that strings vibrate a lot less when they're shorter (ie. the string thickness to length ratio changes and makes it more rigid), so therefore a bit more attack could solve your problem.

Yeah but then it'd sound all plucky and twang-like. I think my problem may be one of those that I just can't solve. Thanks anyway!

Anyone else?

well, i usually don't have that problem. probably because my hand turns the volume knob up on my guitar so it gets louder.

Hey man, action is low, as low as I could get it, and the pickup height is 2mm for all of them. Any help?

OK. Have you played around with pickup height to see if that does any good?

I'll give it a go, and get back to you - I have them at 2mm as that's what this site recommends.. But thanks!

Try lowering the neck pickup, and raising the bridge pickup. Make sure you give equal turns of the adjustment screws for each pickup to keep them balanced.

That would be my advice. Pickup height. Add a touch more compression. Consider moving up to 10's for your strings. Thats the best I can do. I've never really seen that problem before.
