There are a plethora of differences...I'll keep it breif and in layman's terms (if anyone wants to elaborate go ahead haha I am at work and really shouldnt be posing!)

1-AGE - the telecaster (originally named the Broadcaster,) circa 1950.

2-Sound - The Telecaster has alot more of a natural twang to it, more of a cutting sound than the strat. This is due to multiple factors, not the least of which are the bridge configuration, pickup arrangement, and pickup type

3-Appearance - The telecaster is vastly different from the STratocaster in body but also in Headstock design, having its own signature stock, with the exception of some deluxe tele's which have a stratocaster style jumbo headstock.

They are both excellent guitars, though Personally I prefer strats but teles have their moments as well

'Have both, enjoy both. (late-ish 90s American Standards)

Only opinions:

The Strat feels personally, 'lighter and looser.'

Tele has a very nice 2-pup sound.

Strat middle pup is fave sound.

Start is more comfortable to hold (but not as cuddly as a Jazzmaster).

Strat 'feels' like it should be applicable to more genres of music.

Tele often is surprising, how nice it is for jazz and surf.

Personal best-sounding setting for both seems to be the Line 6 Vetta HD / 412 set on '64 Deluxe Reverb model.

I've got one of each - can't really pick a favorite between the two.

I've got one of each (for now), both Am Deluxes and tend to favor the strat,. but there are some nights when I just can't put the tele down.

Hello RockRooster204,

I play my Strats most of the time,
but sometimes it just takes a tele.

Cheers.

The Strat feels better to me. But sound wise I like the tele more.

One more sort of personal observation:

The Tele is less 'moody,' easier to play the same pieces well on, on different days.

Does that make any sense to anyone else?

I actually sat down with a tele yesterday for about an hour and half and jammed.

If you're into clean tones, chicken picking, or if you're just looking for a really bright tone that will cut through.....a tele isn't a bad way to go. (In fact, if you're playing country music, you'd probably prefer a tele specifically for these reasons.)

BUT.....as much as I liked the tele, I'd take a strat over it any day of the week. I can tweak the strat to get a fascimile of that tele sound, plus the strat offers all kinds of different sounds not possible in a tele. It's also a more comftorable guitar to sit with for long periods of time, and it's easier to work on and upgrade in my opinion.

I've got nothing against a tele, but there was a reason Leo Fender developed the strat AFTER he developed the telecaster.

Everyone should have at least one of each. I do find myself
playing the Tele a little bit more though. Like that twang kind
of sound. Plus it seems that when I go to friends houses to play
there will be several people there with Strats and just me with
a Tele and they all want to try it. Kind of like you no everyones
got one but not a Tele.

For me, the best thing about the Tele is that it doesn't have a trem.

So I can easily make alternate tuning changes on the fly at a gig. If I can only bring one guitar to a gig (which has happened), I choose a Tele. I'm not a big trem user anyway.

I can still get a straty sound from one. I can play my favorite strat-toned songs and have them sound fine.
