I'm sorry, I don't like noisless pickups either.

I really liked my old 1992's pickups. They were the ballsiest strat pickups I've ever heard. I regret selling it now. Only guitar I've ever missed out of the many I've traded on craigslist.

Nice guitar, congrats.

You may wish to consider the Fender CS 54's p/ups.
I've played a strat with them .. amazing.

Listen to the duck Buxom,he's trying to tell you that you just need straight Strat pickups to get the trademark "quack" that Strats are supposed to have-the 57/62s are great for that. She's a sweet lookin' guitar though, congrats.

I pulled the neck last night.

It's pretty twisted, but the truss rod is fully functional in both directions.

There was a pick in place of a shim, which explains the awful setup and maybe even the twisting of the neck. The pick left a big indentation in the lacquer in the bottom of the neck pocket, which does seem very soft. Is there a possibility this is nitrocellulose finish?

I'm also going to give these pickups a fair shot, it wasn't properly setup, so it wasn't going to sound proper anyways.

I'm going to spend some time getting it operational. More pics to come. By technicality, I only paid $25 for it. This was someone's beloved guitar once. The neck has the finish worn off, and the guitar as a whole smells like cigarettes, the once vibrant blue is actually pretty yellowed/greened. I've never seen anything like this before, at least not in a 22 year old Strat.

Oh yea, the pickguard has shrunk. A lot.

I hope you took pics of the neck pocket, neck, etc...if like to see the damage you described and the contrast between the exposed finish and unexposed finish...

Very cool acquisition...although I'm not a big fan of Lace Sensors, I'm glad you're giving them a shot before discarding them out-of-hand...
