When I was shopping for tubes for the H&K, people kept recommending Gold Lion KT77s. When I got them in, I noticed that they have 7-pins, but the Rubys that came out have 8 pins.

Are the 7 pin tubes ok to use? Is it safe? I'd have to say I'm hesitant. I can't say I've ever encountered a tube type having different number of pins available. That's a first for me.

I can't find anything in google searches about it. Is it just normal and everyone knows that's the case?

Pin 6 is unused for the KT77, EL34, and 6CA7. If that's the one that's missing, no sweat -- you never needed it in the first place.

A lot of 8-pin output tubes do not use pin 6, it has no internal connection in EL34 tubes and many others.

Do an image search for "EL34 pinout" and "6L6 pinout". It does no harm to have pin 6 absent, other than a) causing confusion and b) maybe making the tube marginally less secure in the socket.

A lot of amp manufacturers solder components to the valve sockets at pin 6, simply because it provides a convenient tag to attach resistors and capacitors close to the tube. This can cause a problem when people decide to change tube types and insert a tube which needs pin 6 connected to HT or ground. Doing this may be dangerous, don't ever "roll" a different tube type into an 8-pin socket unless you know exactly what you're doing. As far as the Golden Lion KT77's are concerned, as long as they're in the socket the right way you'll have no problem.

Ok cool. Thanks for the responses. I really do appreciate it. Can't wait to hear them.

Very useful info guys. Thank you for that. These things weren't cheap.

+1

Especially in light of the fact that you've spent more on quality glass than many spend for their entire amp.

Yea, there's probably some truth to that. When I added up the cost, there's about $600 invested in tubes in the Triamp right now.
