I had a chance to see Mr King 2-3 years ago in Newport RI. Every year I volunteer as a driver to drive VIP's and ATP players for the Newport Hall of Fame Campbell's ATP Tennis Tournament...
I had free tickets, but after driving to Green Airport and back to Newport all day, by 8:00pm I was exhausted and still had an hour's drive to get home....
I regret not going but It just wasn't possible to listen to any loud music at that point...

That's funny, you were practically in my backyard. I live close by the Newport Hall of Fame. I didn't realise that B.B. King was here, though. Then again, I usually hide out in the summer (coming up soon-ugh  ) because this place fills up with douche bags and bro-tards. They love the beach for some reason and I can't really deal with them. Too friggin' annoying. :P Yeah, not my "scene," as it were.

^^ I grew up on Block Island, my parents would sail over to listen to the Jazz fest.. I also worked in Newport for about a year doing the Providence / Newport commute.
Plan on attending the ATP tournament again this year, the qualifying Saturday and Sunday are the best, hardly any spectators, the player's and entourage outnumber spectators 2 to 1...

Even though I have always been near the ocean, I have never been able to understand why people who fight commute traffic and crowds all week, find it relaxing to get back in the car, fight traffic and got to a beach where you have to fight for 10 sq-ft of space... Oh... did I mention the exorbitant parking fee ??

Even though Mr. King played only for an hour, and not at the technical level as last week, the vibe in the air was that we were in the presence of a legend. Thank you Mr. King for a memorable evening.

Felt that way sitting at the feet of Les Paul at the Iridium in NYC, 6 mos before he passed. 8)

VERY COOL... !! 8) 8)

B.B. is a true Showman !!

Waaay back in '79, fresh out of the Navy, I was a lowly Restaurant Mgr. in a Holiday Inn Hotel (paying my way through my MBA). We closed after Lunch (±2 PM) for 4 hrs. until Dinner. During that time, I usually setup shop in a far booth to observe the staff and do my paperwork.

We were the closest hotel to Orchestra Hall, so many of the Players booked there would stay with us.

B.B. King was to appear, but I was too late to get Tix :(

Anyway, @ 2:15, B.B. appeared at our entrance wearing an Ice Cream White Double-Breasted suit, accompanied by his Band/Entourage.

I went to our entrance, a closed gate, opened it and B.B. said: "Can we get Lunch..??"

I said:" Absolutely Mr. King!!... come right in..."

He said: "How you know my name..??"

I replied: " Everybody knows the Blues Boy.. !! "

B.B. rolled his head back and shouted: " Owwwww...!!!"

I got everyone to their tables, had a waiter come over, and took their orders.

He asked me:" Are you coming to the Show tonight..??"

"No" I said... "I was too late to get Tix..."

He replied: "Well... you got 'em now !!..."

2 Backstage Passes... the show was terrific... and we got to go to the after-party !

Got to meet him again last year at Jazzfest in New Orleans, and he remembered me from 33 years before saying: " You're the guy who gave us lunch right..?? " Mrs. LMN was thrilled!!

Yea... he's lost a step or two through the years. But I suspect they'll have to pry 'Lucille' from his hands on his Deathbed.

They just ain't makin' em like that anymore !!

cheers!

That is a great story..BB's the real deal..and an encounter you will always cherish.

jmr986, I'm glad you had the experience that you had. We, unfortunately, had a completely different experience last summer. We went to see B. B. King at the Peter Frampton Guitar Circus.

BB's band came out and played for about 20 minutes. And they were enjoyable. They then helped BB on stage and he played not even a complete song when he started rambling. Frampton came out and they played "The Thrill is Gone" (of course.)

Then BB talked for about 10 or 15 minutes while throwing in a few licks. Then they helped him off stage.

The real disappointment for me is that even though I have seen him a few times prior to this, the image that I have of him now is at this last show. The previous shows were awesome but the last one is the most vivid in my memory. I wish I hadn't gone to this last one.

I had the honor of seeing him in the mid 90s. He was awesome. My brother saw him a year or so ago at Austin City Limits, he said he was good but could tell he has lost a step like the O.P. stated and he said exactly what matonanjin has stated in his post about rambling and not playing much. He is one of the greats that I will never forget seeing. Thank you Mr King

BB King's been a spokeman for diabetes prevention and control in the past, but not enough. He should serve as a kind of 'poster boy' to all of us as to how delibitating obesity, diabetes, and hypertension can render a person. I don't know why it seems to be necessary to go to hell in a hand basket pursuing a professional career as a musician. Not withstanding the rigors of touring, one can still do one's best to eat properly and get some exercise to stay fit[20 min a day of body weight movement]. To forget that it's one's self and one's music that's the product being marketed is folly. Why not keep it fit?

Yeah, I know what you mean. $20 bucks to sit on some dirty beach (1st beach or Easton's Beach) that's usually filled with smelly red seaweed. There use to be some sort of sewage runoff there too, but I think they fixed that when they put in some sort of pump station. It's not too bad in the off season though, even though the weather is colder. Another thing they did was narrow the road on the beach side to one lane from two to put in a bike lane. Yeah, that will help the flow of traffic during the season. I know a bike lane is good, but I didn't understand the logic of that one.

I missed several good opportunities to see B.B. many years ago. Finally, in 2007, I went with some friends to the Seminole Hard Rock to see the B.B. King Blues Festival featuring Al Green and Chaka Khan standing in for an ailing Etta James (I would have loved to hear her perform "At Last"). It seems that established stars in their later years are leaving a lot of the performing to the band and backing singers. At least that was the impression we had watching the first two performers.

Then it was B.B.'s turn. His guitar was distorted for almost the entire first number until somebody turned the gain down on his amp. He played seated, talked almost as much as he played, and he asked us to "give it up for the band" about 7 or 8 times until people were tired of applauding. Seeing The King perform was high on my bucket list and while I regret I didn't buy a ticket all those years ago, I'm very glad I got to see the legend in person.

Clapton is the last performer on my list. I guess I should have bitten the bullet and paid the crazy ticket price to see him at that same Hard Rock venue. He's now talking about cutting back on his touring and thinking of retirement.

I posted on my Facebook page my disgust, after reading an article in our local paper last week, how Mr. King was booed and jeered at a St. Louis venue where he had forgotten lyrics and had hit several sour notes.Since the article appeared to come from a credible source I have no reason to doubt it and if in fact it is true,it is a huge affront to a man who is a Titan of guitardom and of the whole music industry.B.B. king has influenced guiitarists from Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy on up to such notable guitarists as Eric Gales and Joe Bonamossa. It is sinful for any audience members to treat an icon in such a disrespectful and gauche way and this must have been extremely hurtful for a man to endure after all these years of universal adulation. If indeed this is as it was reported, the people who attended that venue should hang their heads in shame.I just hope that the article in the paper is very much an embellishment of what really happened.

It is unfortunate. He is at an age and condition that his touring days perhaps should be limited or at end, in the interest of his legacy....http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2014/04/bb_king_got_boo.html

Unfortunately, the "I've got something coming to me...I came to be entertained'' attitudes of contemporary culture has contributed to a significant loss in what we 'old guys' refer to as R-E-S-P-E-C-T! I wouldn't walk on to a stage for an audience which lacked it. Perhaps it IS time to give Lucille a well earned rest.

From what I've been hearing about this, I wonder if he might be suffering from sort of dementia? I certainly hope this isn't the case. It would be sad to see that happen to him. He is at the age that that's possible.
