I have been very fortunate to get some really cool gear lately and I am a bit behind on posting gear.

I had been looking for a new fuzz pedal, as I wanted a little different flavour from the Big Muff, for a while and wandered into a store I have never really liked and saw this little jem. They also had the Octavio from the same limited edition series but that one really wasn't for me although I did debate snagging it for a collectors item and I may still do that. I wish they also had the univibe, I would have gotten that for sure.

As best I can recall these came out about 3 years ago in commemoration of what would have been Jimi's 70th birthday. I liked them at the time but didn't have the cash for the limited time they were available so as soon as I saw this one I jumped on it.

Review...typical fuzz face...great classic tones for just about anything from late 60's to early 70's.

Cool! Great looking pedal...How does she sound?

I really wanted one of the Octave pedals of that series, but I never found one in stock in a store in person, and hated to buy something online that might not work well with my rig.

It's a stock Fuzz Face in the different enclosure, so as i said typical Fuzz Face.

Once I got it home, it seems a little picky with how it interacts with the guitar at different volumes. The best setying is both knobs at max and guitar at max. All in all it is a solid fuzz pedal and I was happy to pay a few bcks extra because it is cool looking.

I am thinking about the octave pedal still but just can't see myself using it.

Nice. 8) I love a good fuzz. Its nice not to have that gigantic "face" take up your pedal board too.

If it's classic fuzz you want, see if you can find one of these rare birds:

It's probably very similar to what the OP just bought--it sounds like a Fuzz Face, except it's in a Phase 90-sized box...

I honestly don't know much about fuzzes, I've never had ye chance to use one. But from what I've heard on YouTube and such that they can get very messy if not used with clean playing. What is the difference between a fuzz face and say, a big muff?

In my experience, The Muff is a bit muddier/woofier/bassier and a tad more extreme. The Fuzz Face is a bit more trebly/thinner by nature, and has to really be pushed to get the nastiness of a Big Muff.

Yes, you have to be careful with chords--especially with the Big Muff--but it's not as restricting as you might think. Your best bet might be to go to a guitar shop with a few different types of fuzzes, and try the mall.

I decided to pickup the Octavio as well, just because it is cool looking and collectable.

Plus one can never have enough pedals.

No all I need to do is figure out how I will use the Octavio...definitely different than anything I have used before.

I know exactly how you should use it--you should put it in a box and ship it down to a certain Armadillo enthusiast who lives in Texas...

It's sounds great but I just don't really play any cover songs that have this effect so maybe it's time to learn some new tunes and see how other people have used an Octavio.

I figured if nothing else it will prompt me to break out of my comfort zone and try some new things.

In general, most fuzz pedals with volume and boost work as boost/overdrive pedals when the volume knob on the guitar is turned down.
Crank up the volume on the pedal, and you get clean boost.
Crank up the gain on the pedal, and you get overdrive.
Crank up the volume on the guitar past a certain spot, and you suddenly get fuzz.
Tone and rate controls are usually used to control how the fuzz sounds.

How the fuzz behaves varies a lot. Germanium based pedals are much more unpredictable and random than silicon based ones, and may sound like a drunk Geiger counter.
Hendrix and Gilmour both used silicon based ones.
Some fuzz pedals only works well with single notes, while others do chords too, and some are in the middle, and handle 4ths and 5ths, but not much more.

Personally, I have replaced my boost, overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals with my Spaceman Sputnik fuzz. It has become the one pedal I cannot do without.
