Led Zeppelin is/was/are (?) dang near the definition of classic rock--it was blues-based rock and roll that went beyond the blues and rock of the 1950's and early 1960's, incorporating more complicated song structures as well as equipment/instruments used in other genres (mandolin, etc.) or used in a novel manner (use of a bow on an electric guitar).

To me, the quintessential progenitors of "Classic Rock" bands are LZ, the Beatles, the Faces, the Stones, etc.

This is a great topic by the way. A lot of different views on the subject. Particularly the Led Zeppelin scenario. It's a great debate. And probably one that gets to the heart of how bands are perceived and labeled.

It seems to be a band where two different generations viewed them in different ways. They covered a broad spectrum of fans, and I'm sure they wanted nothing to do with how they were to be labeled and marketed. My mom and dad liked them. I still have the record player my dad used to play their albums on. I think it's safe to say that they didn't consider Led Zeppelin to be heavy metal. But my friends and I all did.

True talent transcends it all no matter what you call it.

Funny, how word-association with a term like "classic rock" conjures up different images in different people's minds. I note that S-A's (short) list of classic rock bands are all British, that's interesting. I usually immediately think of groups like Boston, the Steve Miller Band, Bob Seger, the Doobie Brothers, and even Grand Funk Railroad...most of the British bands--Led Zeppelin included--I mentally categorize as "British Rock".

I have never, ever associated the Beatles with classic rock, for me they are among the hardest groups to classify.

When I think of classic rock, I think of seventies and early eighties music, along with power chords, distortion, sustain, and aggressive vocals, Creedence Clearwater Revival being a notable exception to my "rule". And, to me, the Rolling Stones aren't a "Rock" band, but "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band!" There is a difference :D .

Yes, and I wouldn't call "Paint it Black" Rock'n'Roll.
If there's one band that I think is unmistakably Rock'n'Roll, it's Status Quo.

I didn't even notice that all the bands I named were British--of course, there's plenty of US Classic Rock Bands...CCR, ABB and Skynnard (Southern Rock), Seger, Grand Funk, Tom Petty (maybe), etc.
