I'm not sure where I stand on this. Wu-Tang Clan is 'releasing' an album of songs that were recorded over the last 6 years. But here's the catch:

"The music, we are told, will not be available digitally or in any other existing mass format. The plan is for the album to initially be a traveling exhibit, where fans can pay to hear it "as a one-off experience," before one buyer takes possession of it."

Their reasoning?

"In a statement on a site devoted to the new album, Cilvaringz and the RZA explain the method behind their madness. "History demonstrates that great musicians such as Beethoven, Mozart and Bach are held in the same high esteem as figures like Picasso, Michelangelo and Van Gogh.

However, the creative output of today's [recording] artists such as the RZA, Kanye West or Dr. Dre, is not valued equally to that of artists like Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst or Jean-Michel Basquiat… Is contemporary art overvalued in an exclusive market, or are musicians undervalued in a profoundly saturated market?"

So, I understand what they're trying to do, but not sure if this is the way to do it. It kind of sounds like they're taking the music out of the hands of the people and giving it to one rich guy.

Thoughts?

I predict they will achieve less than 10 sales.

the sentiment is nice though.

Music has been cheapened over the years. But were musicians such as Beethoven, Mozart and Bach held in the same high esteem as figures like Picasso, Michelangelo and Van Gogh during their lifetimes? Or were they more on the level of a 'Court Jester' during that time?

Isn't it said that for the most part true genius is rarely only appreciated in death? I've heard that while the masters were praised and in demand. That doesn't mean they were necessarily treated very well. Didn't many of them die in poverty, or exile? Also, I'm not sure The Wu Tang Clan is really the best group to be making this argument. Just sayin'...

In an era where music sales have fallen off the cliff, they have found a way to create some buzz and also make some money -- when their latest album (if released conventionally) may have done neither. All in all, this seems a pretty shrewd move. Even we are talking about it ...

I'm gonna have to give this an "Ooohhh Lawdy" or maybe even a "Bless his heart".

I'll put $5 that this album will either:

a, be available on Pirate Bay within the next few years

b, will be sold on iTunes when Wu Tang are broke.

"You’ve heard the old adage: ignorance of the law is no defense. All citizens are charged with knowing the law. "
Memory sometimes is selective. Although these chaps might have access to brilliance their persistence to choose incorrectly is perhaps not controllable. There has been much talk in the media of late about equality. I wonder who the media will choose to be equal to Eric Clapton or Gary Rossington. :P

I'm a fan of the Wu, but it's stupid. It's an attempt to make art "exclusive", and that's a bad thing.

Especially with a late career album... If it were something to match/surpass the quality of 36 Chambers or Liquid Swords, awesome, but late-career Wu-Tang is, well, less-than-consistent.

The reason they are not held in high esteem like Beethoven, Mozart and Bach is because they suck!
