Just got news from his son Reggie that Arthur Smith died this afternoon. Arthur Smith was a GIANT for decades in Country Music and continued to be a force in the industry regionally via his studio and ad agency work. He built the first real recording studio in the Southeastern USA, Arthur Smith Studios in Charlotte, NC. All sorts of artists recorded there and not just country acts as you might expect. James Brown recorded, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" at Arthur Smith Studios for just one example.

He's a pretty big deal here and his Christmas special recorded decades ago ran every Christmas here, except I didn't see it last Christmas but maybe I just missed it. In this Arthur Smith Christmas Special he played his Antigua finished Fender Coronado II almost exclusively. It was his favorite electric. I saw him play that electric more than any other from the mid 70's up until last year.

Take my word for it, he was a GENUINELY nice guy and a REAL person. Even nicer in person than on his TV Show. I saw him around Charlotte numerous times. This cat could flat PLAY and influenced countless pickers.

One of his songs was ripped off and retitled for the "Dueling Banjos" sequence in the film "Deliverance."

His TV show was syndicated all across the southeast for decades and was shot in Charlotte at WBTV. It was one of the first syndicated music based TV programs ever.

This was a really great musician and he loved helping out the up and coming players. He'd play with ANYONE who wanted to play with him....if they could keep up. Mr. Smith was 93.
