well yes, we´ve all done that at least once but why ? pr ? adverts ? sex? hopeless desperation ? I love guitars , but I recently had to not visit my local shop because they had an ovation that I wanted but could not justify buying , council tax first , but how much is heart , how much head ? Most of the guitars I´ve bought have been considered to the max but every now and then ... take my flying V ... crazy but the most fun I´ve ever had , bought on a whim ( termination pay ) like a girl ,you really don´t know how you feel untill you touch them for the first time .
and still looking for that next love . to be continued ..............

If people stopped buying guitars purely for their looks then PRS would go out of business.

I picked up my PRS in the store mostly because of its looks. But after playing it for a good half hour, I bought it for its playability. It is, by far, the easiest guitar I have for solo shredding. (And also the hardest one to play barre chords on, due to the bookmark thin neck.)

There's nothing wrong with good looks. My loved one is the most beautiful girl on the planet, but it's her heart and mind that won me over. Same with guitars - my Select Tele is so pretty it's sinful, but I'd keep her and play her if she wasn't, because she plays so well, and just feels right.

So nothing wrong with petty, if the other qualities are thee too. It's not an either/or black/white world. Something can be pretty and good too.

I keep looking at PRS and thinking I gotta get one then I play them and hang them back up and tell myself to quit looking at them. I hate the feel of the necks

I have bought for looks. Every Jazz Bass I ever bought was bought for looks. Love the look but wind up not playing them after the "new" wears off.

I bought a PRS.
I kept it for a while too.
I kept it because of how much money it cost me not because it was wonderful.
It was OK.
In the end? It was dispensable.
I think of PRS guitars the same way I think of Gibson guitars.
Beautiful but limited.
They have their uses but they can never replace a Fender.

Ovations? Meh .... blah .... dispensable.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I don't have enough experience to be a "tone snob", so most decent gear sounds good to my ears. That's why I buy primarily based on looks and features. And due to the fact that I only hear my guitar through my amp once or twice a week, I relish in the looking/touching/admiring/unplugged-strumming part alot when not being able to crank them up. It makes me feel good when I inspect my gear and it looks good.

Never. Being left-handed means never having buyers remorse. Or buying much at all.

If I don't like how a guitar looks, I won't buy it. End of.

First electric I brought was a mim 72 custom tele, on wages only a 15 year old gets paid, took me the whole summer season to save up. Saw it in front line, totally unaware of the whole neck shape, radius, and Fret size thing. Foreign language to me at the time.

Brought it purely on looks, never played one till I got it home, but was a match made in heaven because it turned out the neck was huge and I love vintage frets.

Experience now tells me the bridge pup is pretty lame, but I had a big muff and a wah pedal playing pubs at 16, so who cares?

At this point in my life, I will not buy a guitar based on looks or (even) pedigree alone. Early on, I bought a couple of instruments based on these parameters and ended up with a couple of instruments that were less than satisfactory (a 1964 Fender Mustang, a 1971 Fender Musicmaster Bass and a couple of others)...

If it doesn't "move me" with it's feel and tone, it won't become a member of my herd...and if the tone is "fixable" by pickup swaps or component upgrades, I'll buy one with a great "feel".

However, no matter how good it sounds or feels, if it doesn't move me aesthetically, it probably won't go home with me either. I will never buy one of those pointy-heavy-metal axes (BC Rich*, Tregan, you know the type) no matter what, just based on the looks of them.

That's not to say all of my instruments are pretty--my Tele (my favorite guitar) was rather plain until I changed the pickguard, and my Ampeg Big Stud bass is messed up because of the previous owner's "customizations"...but they don't offend my eyes in any way, so I love them.

As far as pedigree: I don't care if a guitar was made by Orville Gibson, Leo Fender, Les Paul and Paul Reed Smith themselves, if it doesn't "move" me, I'll admire it's history but I won't buy it, unless I get it's so cheap I can flip it, I won't buy it. (I know, that's technically impossible, but just go with the example).

*with the exception of the Mockingbird, which I like for some strange reason.

Then you come home to the P, right? I love the look of J's. They're so classy. I just can't ever leave the Precision. It's simple, dependable, and while it might be considered "plain". That suits me just fine. I've never been the Cadillac kind.

I bought this guitar because of the way it looks. The white binding on a black guitar looks great on stage. And I'm currently in a 'bigger is better' phase.

I have been ATTRACTED to guitars based on how they first caught my eye, but I have never bought a guitar just for that "eye candy" factor.

Of course, I have also bought some guitars just because they were so outlandish in their appearance, as long as they played well and sounded attractive to my ear.

What can I say?
