Hi - I apologize if this has been asked in an older thread, but I couldn't find it.

I got a guitar on a trade the other day, and was told it was a 1992 Strat Plus. It does appear to be one - it has the Wilkinson nut, 2point trem with Hipshot Tremsetter, Sperzel tuners, etc. It's a beautiful red burst, although what the marketing name for the color is I'm not sure.

I'm concerned because there is no serial number on either the front or the back of the headstock. I've read the http://www.xhefriguitars.com/ site and searched everywhere else I can for an answer - hopefully someone can put my mind at rest.

I'll be pulling the pickups in a few days to put in some 1996 Gold Lace Sensors (there are two of the originals in the guitar but got a full set cheap, and would like it to be as original as possible) and maybe I'll see if there is a serial somewhere a little more hidden.

I'm wasting time at work right now - will post pics later if someone is interested. For now, I'd be happy with 'you didn't necessarily get ripped off'.

Thanks for your time and knowledge!

Hi BruceM001,

That would certainly help.

I know Jeff likes them and a handful of others as well but I think you'll find most people feel you could do better than Lace Sensors. I have had two guitars with them and did not like them one bit. Arjay and Martian put me onto the Dimarzio Area pups and I would say they're maybe the best silent singles available at the moment. I've tried a number of brands including the much touted Kinmans. I have to say though that the Kinman K9 switch is worth getting but it requires you solder some connectors to the pup leads. The connectors are pretty cheap and widely available. I don't think the guitar would be any more 'original' if you replaced the pups at all. Whether sold by Fender or not and whether Lace or not. A swap is a swap. People who know guitars will look at the solder connections and easily spot that they aren't factory original.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

You know, I sort of expect to not like the Lace either. But I picked up the set of Golds for $50 Canadian, so I thought I might as well try them. They definitely don't have the edge my Bare Knuckles do, but they may have their place. The output is higher, and they take my pedals quite well.

Crap. I believe the mystery is solved. It really looks like the serial has been sanded off, and I can only think of one reason for that.

I'm going to try and get my Guild Starfire III back from him. And then consider what steps to take after that. As much as I like the Strat, if it's stolen I don't want to participate.
