Hey guys, what are the best guitar stores to hit up in the Detroit area? I'm coming from Windsor (Canada), so would prefer something that's not a huge drive. Basically looking for a place with lots of inventory and a decent selection of both entry level and high end stuff. We'll likely be hitting up either the Guitar Center in Allen Park or Roseville, but was hoping to stop elsewhere.

I'd avoid detroit like the plague.

Detroit Guitar in Birmingham is quite good. Small, but classy. I.e. they won't have a huge inventory, but they do have some top gear.
Too bad you don't want to drive an extra distance, because Elderly in Lansing, MI is, in my opinion, one of the best guitar shops in the country.

I'd love to visit Elderly but unfortunately, time is limited (ie have to be back in Windsor by around 4pm due to previous commitments) so a drive out to Lansing probably isn't in the cards. I'll likely have to stick to the suburbs surrounding Detroit. Furthest I'd be able to go would be Pontiac/Auburn Hills area.

Just as an update, I ended up going to Huber And Breese on Groesbeck Hwy and was extremely impressed with them.

We went in looking to only spend $400-600 but were treated like we were looking to spend thousands. They had a beautiful Fender Plus Top Strat for $549 which played great but not perfect. (A little too much relief in the neck, and the tension on the tremolo springs was way too loose - bridge was probably a quarter of an inch from the body). I brought that to the sales guy's attention and took 20-25 minutes and did a full setup of the guitar including pickup adjustment, bridge setup, truss rod, etc. The fact that he spent that much time helping somebody out looking to only spend $600 or less was extremely impressive.

In contrast, we also went to the Guitar Center on Gratiot (Roseville area) and were trying out a Standard MIM sunburst which was nice but badly needed a setup. I asked the salesperson if he could make some adjustments and was basically told "if you buy this guitar, you will get a gift card that you can use towards a setup."

Anyway, needless to say we went back to Huber and Breese and bought the Plus Top off the guy who was helping us earlier. Guitar plays like a dream.

The point of this story is not to knock Guitar Center but rather to give a shout out to Huber and Breese for their great service.

Sounds like a successful trip all the way around...

How about some pics of that Strat!
