I just put on new strings. now everytime i change them i notice something, one time whenm i string it, the string coils around at least 4 times, and other times when i restring, i will only coil them like once or twice. I realize that at times, this can affect how long the guitar stays in tune and such, but are there any long term affects?

What's always worked for me is......I go one and a half tuners past the post where the string is going (one tuner past on the 5 and 6 strings). Then that's where I make the bend. After that, I just wind them on. Works for me everyt time. (See, CA Feathers? I told you I could do stings).

Well what I do is string it through the tuner, then with hte guitar on one lap I pull the string as taught as I can with one hand and wind the tuner with the other. That way I don't have to keep turning the peg to get it taught, the strings slip less often and there are less winds around the post (which I heard is better than overwinding)

Practise makes perfect just like all aspects of guitar. Let me tell you, the first time I strung up my 12 string (first time I had ever strung up an acoustic, too), it took me about two bloody hours. The bridge pins kept popping out as I tuned it up, strings were slipping, I pricked my finger twice on the string tips (and bled, heh), very fustrating!

I take the string thru the post and leave enough slack so I can wrap
it several times . I take it though the post bend it back around
to were it enters the post then up over itself then turn. On strats and
teles I turn all the machines away from me . If turners are on both
sides I do fat strings away from me thiner strings toward me.

I was taught this by a guitar repair guy when restringing Acoustics with bridge pins:
Put the end of the string into the hole in the bridge till it's well below the top; insert the pin into the hole with the groove toward the neck so the string will be "in the groove". Push the pin in while at the same time pulling the string back out till the ball (that's what the thing at the end of the string is called) contacts the pin and inside top.
Ain't that great? Well that doesn't mean it's going to stay while you tighten the string up. The same guy used a tapered reamer on my Takamini that fixed the problem of the whole thing coming right back out when I tightened the string.

Here is a website with a video.

I like the old Kluson-style 'vintage' Saf-T-Post tuners-the ones where you take the end of the string and stick it DOWN the center of the tuning machine shaft, then bend the string through the top slot. I have seen a LOT of people use these where they didn't realize that's how it was done, and wound up with unstable tuning, multiple string windings around the tuner shaft, loose string ends, and making the guitar look and sound like a total mess.

I don't see a big problem with it. I do it sometimes too. 8)
