Any of you that regularly gig, have you ever had issues with taping your gig or getting photos? Anyone told you they were offended by being taped or that you couldn't use their photo etc?

To me, there's no better advertising for your band than to have a person who's thinking of booking you to see a video. There you are, this is what it's like live, look there's people having fun and crowd in your establishment.

I'm sure I'm missing some angles that others have thought of which is why I'm posting this here just to solicit some alternate viewpoints. If you are in a bar, at a concert, or even at Walmart there are cameras everywhere, so if you aren't a drunken slob or breaking the law where is the harm if I make a 2 min video for our band's facebook page and you happen to be on the dance floor.

Again, not trying to suggest that personal privacy is not important, just asking for some discussion on something I've run into as a problem.

Unless it's a private party they have ZERO expectation of privacy. Even if it is a private party. Whether you are allowed to film or not should be hashed out with who hired you. Not some random person at the show. We've never had anyone come out and say "don't film me" at a show. However, I've noticed sometimes when filming that a couple people would move to the back of the audience as to not be on camera. Which makes sense. You didn't force them to come to a show. They chose to come. If they don't like being on camera either move out of the shot, or hit the road. People are weird.

A couple things that might help. I video a lot of show that I do. I usually set up a camera on a small tripod sitting on a high shelf or something at the rear of the room.
This gets mostly the back of peoples heads and the band straight on. This is a lot less intrusive than someone walking around with a camera pointing it at people, and it still gets you the ambiance of the room. You can still have someone with a hand held camera for different angle shots to edit in, just don't have them do the crowd. My wife and daughter often take video with their phones, and I edit that in with the stationary camera at the back of the room. I hope this helps.

Be upfront about the shooting, so people have a chance to avoid it if they feel strongly about not being videotaped. Saying something like "After the break, we will be shooting some video footage" won't hurt (although it might cause a line at the ladies' restroom mirrors).

Chris, I agree, promo videos/DVDs are crucial at this time if you are proactive about reaching fans. Many roadhouses/bars/niteclubs have their own recording gear set up. Ask to use it if it's as good or better than what you have. After that you will know where to set up and who has to know about it. Don't feel intimidated. I have seen well known papparazzi get cussed out by people who didn't want their photo taken.

Thanx for the input.

The silly thing, to me anyway, is that the one who complains the most about shooting at a gig is the singer. He refuses to have his name listed on our FB page too. Really silly when someone else posts a photo they took, one of our friends and then only 3 bandmembers names are listed.

I've made it clear from the stage if we are taping, saying something about video for FB page, etc. Not trying to embarass anyone. And in reality, we're small time, the lights are behind us so the shots I've tried to get are from the front where you can see the band but the audience is basically shadows.

We've had a couple good gigs in a row but due to the singer being so "loud" about it I don't bring a camera or vid camera anymore. Sucks because maybe I'd just like to have it personally ya know?

Looks to me like the singer is embarrassed of the band. I'd try to get a replacement if that's the case ;)

His excuse is it's his "privacy" and he will control it. He gets bent out of shape if someone posts a photo of his daughter's basketball team on FB or something. I've tried to make the point that in today's world of phone-cam's and Youtube that if you don't want to be photo'd than you better stay home or at least not get involved in anything.

He does a great job and invites many of his friends to gigs so don't think he's embarassed, just not realistic. If you're in a band, especially as a "front" man than you have to expect to get some attention I'd say.

Again, legally or otherwise, If you're at a public place you have ZERO expectation of privacy. If you daughter goes to a public school and plays a sport, guess what? Same thing. If you joined a band that had plans to gig outside of private parties. Again, ZERO expectation. Unless you want to negotiate with the venue owner his terms of no photos allowed. Newflash, unless you are really, really in demand you will be negotiating yourself out of work.

This is just my take, but seriously. What type of a$$hole has a fb page and then complains about someone posting photos of them? First, it's called social media. Not anti-social media. If you don't want to be tagged there's actually a setting where you can not allow people to tag you, or that you have to approve it. Second, if you don't want people knowing what you do on fb. DON'T HAVE A DAMN FB! Lastly, If you don't want your picture taken at gigs. GET THE F*CK OUT THE BAND! Sorry, but prima donna crap like this should not be tolerated. Ever. If this clown wants to dictate terms like this he should start his own band. He can dictate all the terms. Pay people to put up with him, and never book a single gig. Ever.

Good luck with this guy, man. I feel for ya.

I completely agree with TheKingofPain.. If he doesn't allow any photos and videos and whatnot, he's also hurting your promotion big time and thus is also hurting the chances for more gigs.

King of Pain, I think you're spot on. Get the hell out of the band if your privacy is that important.

He doesn't have a FB page but he hears about the team photos being posted and things and gets all bent out of shape. Yeah he's a prima donna that is taking a lot of fun out of things for me, regardless of how good he is.

I'm just glad that it seems that you guys also find this behavior strange for someone who wants to be in a band.

Do a showcase. Clubs love it if you're any good. The way it works is that you offer to play a night for low pay (or sans pay) in lieu of them allowing you to video pre-post and during. Just make sure you have a pro doing the video work.

Another interesting idea Miami Mike....

And I really think your sig line hits part of the nail in this situation right on the head. He has taken this group for granted.....We were already playing, we already owned all the equipment, we practice at least 1/2 the time without him. He shows up and sings.

Why can't people just play nice?
