Once theres a chip, should it be soft enough that you can chip it away with a fingernail and almost no effort, or is that a bad finish?

I ask because I'm worried I may have a "flaky" 50th anniv. Jag... Especially since the original chip just appeared on its own :|

I'm no expert by any stretch. However, when I got my used AVS 57RI P the only flaw was a pen tip sized ding on the back side of the body near the arm contour. I'm not going to test it, but I have run my fingers over it checking it and it doesn't look like it would flake or crack away. Atleast not with a fingernail. Maybe if I took a file or screwdriver to it. I don't have very much experience with Nitro. This bass, and a couple of old basses and guitars I was lucky enough to play. So I'd let the elder statesmen of the board chime in before getting your hopes dashed.

Yea, but most of the nitro is still in tact on the body.

When damage happens to nitro, in my experience, it happens and doesn't show itself immediately. As in, you could get a ding and not even know it until the nitro finally becomes weak enough to fall off. It's hard for me to explain it, but I guess that makes sense. Basically dead skin if that makes more sense.

Not to worry Floyd, it is probably a magical chip. That can add a certain coolness to the Jag... 8)

This is a more recent model AVS, right?

Because I will say that I'm pretty stunned at how thin the more modern nitro finishes are. Back in February I bought a barely ever touched 2012 AVS 57 RI P in White Blonde. I gig fairly regularly. Usually multiple times a month, and rehearse and practice on a regular basis. I'm already starting to see some thinning around the top of the forearm contour. Where you can see a bit of the shade of the wood coming through the milky white of the nitro. Pretty crazy. I've personally never had anything against Relic'd Custom Shop instruments. However, given how thin the modern AVS Nitro seems to be. My baby'll be "Roadworn" in no time. No need to pay for that upcharge I guess.

Here's a pic when I first got her.

The back which stuns me everytime I look at her.

I think she looks real sharp with the 10 hole WD Tort replacement guard I got her to give her a little personality. I'm thinking about putting the pup cover on her, aswell.

Lastly a pic of her in action. Right where you'd expect the wear from my right arm position in this pic. Right at the very top. You can't really see it much from the front or the back. Not more than a foot away, anyhow. However, You can start to see a little bit of the "flesh" of the ash creeping through. The finish is still intact, but you can obviously tell it's steadily thinning. It's actually pretty cool, but man. That was QUICK! I figured it'd take years before she started showing real wear. Not a month and a half. However, mine isn't "flaky" at all. It's still very "tacky", but thinning quickly.

Any pics of the guitar? I love seeing pics of beautiful Fenders.

I checked out your facebook pix. I saw your antigua bass too. I played in a band a couple years back that had a antigua jazz bass and a antigua strat.

Nice! I love Antigua. It's kind of the red headed step child around here, but I've always dug it. I was really pumped when they did that special run. I think White Blonde has to be my favorite finish, but there's so many really nice ones. Especially the transparent ones. If only I were rich I'd probably have a Precisions in all my favorite colors. Which is probably a really shallow and awful thing to say, but I don't care.

Clear fingernail polish works for chips in nitro finishes.

Thin nitro finishes chip very easy. The first generation hwy 1s were terrible for chipping. If you bumped them on anything you got a chip. You gotta be careful with them.
