This is a blog article I found on Guitar Player's website-
http://www.guitarplayer.com/blogentry/751

I found it interesting.
It's not where I'm at--but maybe one day.

Could be fun.

I do get the part about being content making music.
I also have never given up playing, although due to life there have been times I have played less than normal.

That's pretty much where I'm at. I play with as many people as I can, a show here and there, open mic nights. I haven't found anything steady yet. So many people have commitments that limit the amount of time they can rehearse. But it's all good and all fun. I've replaced the hope of making it big, with the hope of making it through the night! I just bought a new amp, and weight was major factor in the purchase. I'm not about to tweak my back just to sound a little bit better. So, yeah, it is a young man's game.

For the most part, yes. Occasionally, a band or artist won't really "make it" until their 30s or 40s (Danny Brown, Thee Oh Sees), but that's about as "old" as I've really seen someone get their break outside of blues, jazz, and country.

I guess you guys never read Uncut magazine. A lot of older guys release discs that sell really well. Check out the section in the back. I may release my own disc some day and I'm 50.

I think I hit this a bit early. Then again, I had a long break in between putting down music and picking it up again when I was young. I played in punk bands in high school and then ended up in the Army. After the army I just never found my way back to it. I did a lot of drinking and partying until I had my first son. Then after 13 years of never touching an instrument a friend who knew I had once played got the bright idea to start a band when we were in our late 20's. That was 10 years ago. Since then I've been in plenty of bands. Some with people who were concerned about "making it". Others not so much. Personally, I've just always wanted any band I've been in to be the best band we could be. Not the best, or biggest band in the world. But to hit our stride as artists. Find our "sound". Sure I gig steady, but I've never had any illusions about "making it". At least not since I was in high school. I think picking up music again and being a "Dad" saved me in a lot of ways. "Making it" to me is when we're up there and hitting that sweet spot. It's not about a record deal, or selling out stadiums. I don't even know if that's a "young man's game". Plenty of old cats still do it. Plenty of them are "Dads". As an above poster pointed out. Plenty of older guys put out really great music on their own, privately funded projects. I think the part of it that's a "young man's game" is the sacrifices that you have to make to do it. Those sacrifices are easier to make when you're young and you don't have other responsibilities. In the end, some of the best music I've ever heard in my life has been played by people in their 40's, 50's and 60's in local bars. Really top shelf work. Certainly better than the majority of what gets airplay and considered as "successful". I don't think ending up there is such a bad thing at all.

If you look at the big picture, there are many ways to continue with music in several varied areas no matter what your age is. (Movie scores, soundtracks, jingles, voice overs, musical therapy, game soundtracks, studio work, etc).

One example is cell phones, tablets, XBox, Playstation - all have games with music.

Don't let age intimidate you, be inspired and go for it.

Lots of good points here. Guess that question depends on what "music" you're talking about.

If it's living in a van on the road with 4 other guys and having no permanent home, surviving on fast food and little sleep. Than yeah that's probably a young man's game.

If it's sitting on the porch enjoying a brew with some good friends and strumming acoustics than it's anyone's game.

Carrying 12 tons of gear in to a gig in the middle of the afternoon for a gig that night, probably a young man's game.

Plugging one or two mics into a small mixer in a garage for an afternoon of riffs and cover tunes, anyone's game.

What "music" means to you depends on where you are in your life and what responsibilities you have I guess.

I am in a "Dad" band. All four of us juggle the work/family life, but when Friday night comes, its all ROCK AND ROLL!

NICE! I nead to find a "Dad" band.

I am comfortably into my 30's and I stay interested by giving lessons. Not full time. I have 2 students now...1 who has 30 min a week and 1 who does 30 min every two weeks. The later is just starting and in his 30's as well.

It's more about finding what you want to do with music and enjoying the ride. Not everyone needs to be on the next Rolling Stone cover.

I’d love to find some “Dad’s” to jam with. I think the only hope I have of joining or forming a band is if my daughters are in it LOL. I have recently discovered my 3rd Grader has a lot of potential singing. I always got a chuckle out of her Ethel Merman style but its certainly developed. She PROJECTS and sings some of the Disney tunes really well, like the stuff from Brave and Frozen. Going to learn some on the acoustic and see how she likes singing along. Maybe she’ll get the bug.

"Let it Go" on a continuous loop at captainc's house.

There's some good acoustic work done by Alex Mandel on Brave. That was some fun open tuning stuff to learn

I have high respect to those musicians who pursue playing music even they are in mid 40's. Music is not merely passion but it is their life.
