Watching the history channel this morning and the Fender Stratocaster made the list coming in at number 63 out of 101 objects that changed the world. Of course, the segment wouldn't have been complete without Jimmie Hendrix at the helm. Pretty cool.... :D

Not that I don't think electric guitars aren't awesome, but I can't see how it could possibly make even top-1000 - there are things like the spear, knife, needle, bowl, rope, hammer, tent, clothing, boat, paper, wheel, harness and hundreds of other things that surely must have changed the world more.
Would the world have been fundamentally different if the Stratocaster was never made, and electric guitar players had to do with Telecasters and Gibsons? I seriously doubt it.

Although I agree with you, it was how "object" was defined that lead to the compilation of the items in this particular episode and they went through great lengths to define it, lol.
This is what the program description read:
"Seemingly ordinary objects can hold powerful significance in the annals of human history.

With "ordinary" being the main attribute, I guess it applies. :D

Well if you think about it, the building of the Stratocaster has employed probably 1000's of people around the world for many, many years, so it has had an extreme impact on the lives of those people.

Of course we are talking about 1st world issues here, the spear, knife, etc., mentioned early are items for survival not the wants of people with expendable income. I don't think the history channel was stating their list for all of human time either.

My .02 cents anyway.

I'm still trying to figure out how a damn Strat makes the list but The Precision Bass doesn't. It revolutionized the way popular music is heard and played. No offense, Strats are killer guitars.

Music has been an integral part of human civilization ever since Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal man sat around campfires chanting and banging on logs. The Fender Stratocaster more so than just about any other musical instrument, has been universally embraced since its first appearance in 1954.The Strat has been associated with so many of the most revered, innovative and trailblazing titans of the musical world, that it's no surprise to me that it has been given such lofty recognition.Although there have been many great guitars such as the Les Paul,D'Angelico,Manser, etc. the Strat although fairly simple in concept,is incredibly sophisticated in the overall execution of its plans, such as being designed with such forethought that the neck etc. of one Strat can be quickly interchangeable with another Strat. This innovation alone was so simple in concept yet it was brilliant in that it saved a lot of money in construction and labour costs, plus it saved the guitarists from the extended down time that they'd have if their Les Paul or other set-neck guitar got a cracked headstock etc.The Strat indeed does qualify and has earned its place as an object that changed the world.

Hell, what about the toaster oven?

Red Baron and DiGiorno wouldn't exist without it!

I wonder if Bob Dylan would have been "booed" of the stage differently with a Tele.

Taking nothing away from the spear (I could use one today; my secretary is getting restless), I assume the list was referring to "non-essential" items* that changed our lives...

However, if you were to ask the average non-musician person to identify an electric guitar by shape only, the one they'd choose (knowingly or not) would be the Strat.

It also (arguably) has more imitators, ripoffs, aftermarket replacement parts/"upgrades" and stylistic starting points than any other electric guitar.

While I prefer the Telecaster, I love (and own) one Fender Strat and two G&L's that are Strat derivatives.
I think the Telecaster just isn't considered "sexy enough" for such a list.

*yes, I know it's sacrilege to deem an electric guitar as "non-essential," but you know what I mean...
