Hi and thanks for reading and I hope its OK to post this here.

Hubbys bucket list includes a visit to Fender and Im trying to arrange this (we are in Australia and Im current planning our next US trip).

Im wondering if its possible to buy a guitar from the factory because Ive read yes you can and Ive also read you can only purchase from a dealer.

Can you please advise and many thanks for time.

Good question, I've always wondered about that for international visitors- especially with the design your own experience.

I'm sure your husband will be stoked with that trip :)

You write about visiting the Fender Factory in Corona ? I visit 2 times , last time in fall 2013 .

There is the Guitar Specialty Store, It is a custom built guitar ONLY ; you choose your body , neck, pickups everything parts by parts. Not same as the Custom shop guitar.
IMO you need a appointment or wait until they built the guitar ( wait days ...weeks before you pickup the guitar ? )

You can't buy standard model , ready to go the one you find in stores.

There is a statement from the CEO Larry Thomas. Here is a partial quote.

"The American Design Experience at the Fender Visitor Center in Corona, Calif., was recently launched to give Fender enthusiasts the ability to become directly connected to the creation of the guitar of their dreams. Any guitarist now has the ability to hand select exotic or standard-shaped necks, combine them with unique or standard-painted bodies, and the pickguard and pickup configuration they most desire. By choosing among the components of high-quality U.S. production-made Fender instruments before they are assembled, customers can create the specific look, feel and weight of their dream guitar."

The direct price quote is:

"Neck sizes vary in thickness and shape, and include many options from the vast assortment of Fender models. A selection of pickups and pickguards is made from assembled parts also freshly produced from the factory floor. Prices for completed guitars range from around $1,600 for a standard model up to around $2,400, depending on specific materials and options selected. Neck plates are then engraved as “American Designed” and are personalized for the customer, including the guitar’s specific “birth” date."

It sounds like the options are within the American Standard line. I'd like to know if Nitrocellulose Lacquer is a finish option and which pickups are available but I don't anticipate them publishing that...who knows.

Well, Fender prices have significantly increased sometime in the last 1-2 years. I wasn't paying attention but I'm back to lusting after a specific model with a desired set of specs.

It makes sense to me that it would be priced above the American Standard line since it is a customized guitar that isn't Custom Shop.

Hi and thanks for your replies as Im a planner and I would hate to show up and he be disappointed.

So there is a Guitar Specialty Store and hopefully he can pick and choose? I will talk to hubby about contacting Fender a few months before we leave in case he has something special in mind. Ive told hubby that Im prepared to change the schedule so we land/visit Corona and then fly to Seattle (hello Jimi)/San Fran/LA before returning to Corona to pick up the guitar before flying home.

I also snuck a pic of his guitars to share. The two on the top row he bought about 30yrs ago. The Les Paul is what he picked up on our trip to Gibson but we didnt have enough time to get to Corona.

Thanks again,

Nitro is not an option in the American Design Experience builder outside of the Vintage Series necks that are available. All bodies are Poly. At this time.

Hi Denali68,
There's this: http://www.fender.com/visitor-center/
(good video on that page as well.)
I believe that they usually have a few guitars already built in the Visitor's Center. You also have the ability to "put one together" in the Center that they would assemble for you (I believe that takes about 30 days).

The caveat being, that to the best of my knowledge we are not shipping those out of the states, so it would be up to the buyer to arrange for the shipping, duties etc. i.e., getting it out of the states.

All the best,
rob

Thanks again for your replies, it is appreciated.

I spoke to hubby and he has a few months to decide if he wants to go with the American Design or custom and he will contact/order it so we can pick up when we get there. The only problem with the American Design is hes now talking about buying two guitars instead of one but no problem with shipping/taxes as we will carry it home with us.

Hubby also said that it wasnt a Floyd Rose but a Kahler - whatever that means, Im sure that makes sense to you guys.

Thanks again,

Hi stratele52

The Strat is a 75 Hard Tail.. It came with No Tremolo, the body is solid, no Grooves for springs, the serial numner is on the 3 Nut plate at the back of the guitar.

The Original Pickups went south on me.. and I replaced them with the Texas Pickups...

The Tremolo and Locking System is a Kahler... My preference, as I do not like the Floyd Rose system..

Also I haven't got a 5 or 3 way switching, instead I have 3 switches which turn the pickups on or off...

This allows to have whatever a 3 way or 5 way switch will do but with additional 3 Combinations.

Totally Off
Neck Pickup - ON Middle Pickup - OFF Bridge Pickup - ON
All Pick Ups ON

The Telecaster is 1978 and the only mod here is the Seymour Duncan Bridge Pick Up when the Pick Up went south..

And I have just picked up a Starcaster... Not that is really cool, never considered a hollow body till now
