I tried one out of curiosity, and could NOT put it down. I was captivated by the possibilities of new music I could create with it. As a guitar player, I found it to be very comfortable. What a cool Bass!

The one I tried out was a Squier. Anyone ever tried the Fender model? I'm wondering how much different the pickups are. I'd seriously consider a Fender model. It was soooo fun to play one of these.

Yes, I have the Squier model that showed up over four months after I ordered it, but it was worth the wait. Lots of fun. I'm still learning about who has used it in the past and what songs it was used on.

I don't know much about it but I believe the Fender model is MIJ/CIJ.
Fender has made baritone guitars in the past from time to time.
They typically don't sell all that well ... which could actually make them more desirable, IMO.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Here's the info on Fender's 6 string, Bass VI

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bass_VI

Scroll down for a list of people who have played/recorded with it.

Edit: For me personally, I have never played a Bass VI. It would be cool though. I would rock the hell out of it, and probably play Rush's "YYZ" easily since the Bass VI has a shorter scale and thinner strings.

I love--but unfortunately do not own--Bass VI guitars.

I have played an original from the late 60's, the Pawn Shop version from a couple of years ago and the Squier version, but I have not ever had the scratch to pick one up when I found a shop with one in stock.

It is very high on my GAS list (top four). When I get one, I still haven't decided if I'm going to string it/set it up as a baritone or a true-one-octave-below bass guitar. I tend toward the latter, partially due to the relative ease of playing with others (no mental transposing to the right key).

Thanks for feeding the GAS, JS!

The Pawnshop version is a spin to the original design with simplified pickup switching complemented by two Jaguar single coils in the neck & middle and a humbucking Jazzmaster pickup in the bridge.

Actually, there are two Fender models: One is a limited edition MIJ model built mostly to the original specs and comes in Candy Apple Red with matching headstock. The Pawn Shop model is MIM and sells for a little more than half the MIJ.

The Squier design is also relatively true to the original, but sells for less than half the price of the MIM. That's why (one of the reasons, anyway) there was a four month wait to get one.

Is it safe to play one through a guitar amp?

I have played it through a guitar amp at low volume, when I wasn't using a lot of the low end and when I wanted some reverb, otherwise, I use the small bass amp I have.

I was just reading the specs of the Bass VI, and when it mentioned a 30" neck scale, something clicked in my brain.

Years ago when I was playing hardcore music, I bought a baritone off eBay. I had no idea how big this thing would be, but when it shipped in, the neck was way too big. The neck scale? 30".. I was like,"holy crap, I guess I should have read the specs closer. This thing is bigger than I am." So I immediately bought an LTD baritone (27" neck) and completely forgot about the other one. At the time, I was in a band that was drop tuning, and I refuse to play a 7-string.

But when I read " 30"-neck ", it clicked in my head that I have one in the closet.

I sold the LTD about 5-years ago.

Not exactly a Bass VI, but it makes me wonder what I can do with it. Maybe even rout out a swimming pool rout and custom make a pickguard. Wonder what this thing would sound like with say, a Gibson Classic in the neck and a P-Bass in the middle.

Could be a nice project, even if it is ugly as sin. Why DID I buy this thing???

I like them, I can see a lot of possibilities for them, but I don't know how much I would play one at this time--especially as I just got a fretless bass.
But maybe in a year or so I'd be ready for one.

I have the MIJ model purchased last spring. Run it through an Orange Crush 50BXT which also doubles nicely for guitar.
