Today I was watching a demo of the 1965 Total Tone Strat in Sonic Blue on a F.B. site for Fender diehards.I was blown away by how Fender has naile the exact tone of the "L" series '65 Strat with the new Custom Shop Total Tone Black pickups.I'd love to have a pair of the '65 Total Tone Strats with ne in Sonic Blue and the other in 3 tone sunburst, unfortunately I wouldn't be able to swing the purchase of only one with my current financial status-that may have something to do with buying at least 4 guitars and 4 amps and at least a half dozen pricey effects pedals in the past 12 months also.I am seriously considering buying a couple of sets of the Total Tone Black pickups and putting them in some of my other Strats other than my old '65.My "Hendrix Monterey" black lefty Strat would really sound authentic with the Black '65s in it and I'd even consider putting a set in my Jimmie Vaughn or 50th Ann. Strat. These are certainly the best Strat replacement pickups that I have heard yet.

Sorry I don't have a link to it,I'm not even sure where I found the link but it may have been on the FB Fender Fanatics site.It is on Youtube though and is well worth having a listen to the incredible mid-60s tone in these puppies.

I don't like to repeatedly edit my posts so here are some video links. http://proguitarshop.com/video-reviews/fender-total-tone-57-strat#?type=15&manufacturer=14 and http://proguitarshop.com/video-reviews/fender-total-tone-65-strat-olympic-white-closet-classic#?type=15&manufacturer=14. I don't know if this one is different than the others.... http://proguitarshop.com/video-reviews/fender-custom-shop-total-tone-strat#?type=15&manufacturer=14 .

I remember watching the first Pro Guitar Shop Total Tone Strat video and thinking that it was excellent at demonstrating the tonal differences between 50s and 60s Strat pickups. I wanted both guitars after it ended until I checked the prices. Uh, not going to happen. I also wanted Andy Martin's chops but that was even less likely. :)

Two questions that pique my curiosity amigo mio

-What kind of sound system do you have patched into your computer such that you can reference that tone as being 'dimed'?

-Do you have a 'standard' amongst that clutch of guitars of yours against which you're comparing it.

IMHO, everything coming across YouTube sounds like crap.

Thanks for the link John, those pickups sound great. I'm going to stick with my favorite Fender Stratocaster pickups though. The Tex Mex set, at the lower price of $99.99 there is no equal IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian).

I think you're probably asking Derek, Doc, but since I'm already here... :)

YouTube audio is heavily compressed. Clicking on the wheel at the bottom right of the video window allows the selection of higher quality 720p resolution and less audio compression.

As for speaker systems, I can't live without good sound. A set of Altec Lansing 6021 speakers is connected to my 27 inch iMac and a set of Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers is connected to my notebook with a Bose Bluetooth Mini speaker for good unplugged, outdoor sound and iPad audio. YouTube audio sounds good through all of those systems.

The Custom Shop 50s and 60s Total Tone Strats sound good to me. My reference guitars are the '65 Strat I have owned for 46 years and a Custom Shop '56 NOS. Of course, my guitars would sound better if Andy Martin was playing them. That fact is not in dispute.

Agreed on Tex Mex pickups. I have a set in a Jimmy Vaughan Strat and they do sound great. There is a lot of tone there at a bargain price.

It's only now I read your post Doc,I was basing what I heard from listening to it through a very good pair of Koss headphones, granted they may not up to the standards of Sennheiser, Bang & Olafson etc. they are pretty decent and as the owner of a '65 Strat for 40 years,I'm well acquainted with the beautiful "L" series quack, sparkle etc. that have become buzzwords for describing the tone-I just call it Ambrosia for the ears...lol.Cheers.

OK...close, but no guitar.   Baseline references are important but I'll still hold out for some sonic differences between live and recorded sound. It would be more grounded if done in the same fashion as guitar mags do 'shoot outs'. Comparing two guitars in the same room through the same amp channel and EQ is a better experimental design. At the end of the day, though, if it pleases the listener's ear, go for it.
