I have several Stratocasters. While I love my MIM' and in particular I have a Sonic Blue/rosewood Blacktop thats very nice, however I have come to dislike the narrower string spacing. The MIA string spacing is so much more comfortable.

I don't know much about Fender guitar string spacing. However, I do know that I once played a Classic 72 Tele Deluxe and while I wasn't a fan of the super flat radius. I was a fan of the really wide string spacing. I mean it was reeeeeaaaallllyyyyy wide. Both the wide neck and flat radius combined to give it a string spacing very comfortable for me coming from a bass. I would think that a wide neck, even with the vintage radius might give you a different feel, but similar spacing to a narrow neck with a flatter radius. Not sure what model Strats would feature those particular combos. I can play guitar but I definitely don't consider myself a "guitarist" by any stretch. Either in terms of talent or as a means of expression. I usually just play for songwriting purposes or when people need someone to sit in. So I'm not as well versed on year and model neck specs like I am with Fender basses. I would think it's safe to say that 80's necks past the sale to FMIC will generally have the 9.5 radius outside of the Vintage Reissues. What neck width and profiles they have I don't know. However, you guitarists get a LOT of options when it comes to production models. SO I'd think the perfect combo is out there on a stock instrument for sure. Sorry I can't be of more help other than "the switch happened in the 80's". That's really all I know as when Fender basses switched to the 9.5 radius I stopped having as much interest in them and started looking at the reissues. There are tons of really super knowledgable guitarists on here. As you're a Strat player have you tried asking in the Strat forum specifically?

I wish one could still get the C and D width necks of yore without going masterbuilt and waiting several years. At least one big hand choice like 1.75" (C) nut width would be a welcome addition to the American Design Experience confuggerator.

I had a 1978 lefty Strat that I had flipped and strung right handed,it has a "B" neck but after about 6 months it developed a very strange and rare longitudinal warp. The replacement neck that Fender sent me was an "A" neck and although it was 1/8" narrower,it was still quite comfortable-probably because my hands are far from being the size of catchers mitts.

So its would be a true statement to say most all of the classic Strat Players were using 7.25 radius necks, Clapton, Blackmore, Hendrix, Beck etc.

If they were playing Strats before the intro date cited.......Yes.

ZZ,
I framed the post poorly. It was really more rhetorical than a question.

I've been plaing them and hanging out on this forum for about 4 years now and never knew that 7.25 radius necks were the only thing going up until the 1980's. Totally amazed. Knowing this makes me appreciate these guitarists work all the more.

'Frankly Scarlet', we didn't give a damn back then, [didn't have a frame of reference either] but thanks for the vote.
