I believe that some music has gotten over-commercialized, like certain songs are perfect for cutaways to well commercials/ads. It seems as though the bottom has dropped out as most acts have resorted to sex appeal, bandwagon, nostalgia, having fun, comparison, derogatory lyrics/content etc. etc. I've noticed that in some buyer's guides they have interviews with musicians but it all seems out off kilter, as their gear gets all the acclaim and their album is a basic thumbnail picture. Also, you have all of these reality T.V. shows that are looking for "Stars", it's almost like our culture is trying to coax creativity. It's like life imitates life, which imitates life, which again imitates life and so on and on and on and on....

I agree 100%. Great example, this song was used in ads for Schick's 'Intuition' razor:

There is a really huge amount of fantastic music about, however you are not about to be spoon-fed it by the radio and reality tv programs.

Media are feeding us commercialized music only, more or less. That's the reason. Those of you that have been watching world cup ski competition must have heard of Tina Maze, she won a gold medal in the Olympics this year. She is a very good skier and quite a celebrity here in Slovenia. Her voice, however, is $@!&. She has no musical talent whatsoever. She can't sing at all, like *REALLY* can't. Guess what happened? A Slovene "producer" made a "song" for her and it was instantly being played over and over again on pretty much every radio station here in Slovenia. The lyrics were in English (and that alone makes it pretty much impossible for any new band to get airplay - if the song is in English instead of Slovene), the song was $@!& and her voice was autotuned. But she's a celebrity and can do pretty much whatever she pleases. When she did sing "live" once after a ski match (she won it or something, can't remember), it was all just lip-syncing and even that was done very, VERY poorly. The 2 or 3 times she actually sang during that lip-syncing charade, she was off both rhythmically as well as off tune. Even I am a better singer and I can't sing unless I am really drunk (although the singing is, apparently, quite decent at that point). But she has one thing me and 99.9% of other people in Slovenia don't have - marketability. That's the only thing that counts nowadays, not originality or musician skills, but marketability. For originality and musician skills you have to look elsewhere. That doesn't mean, though, that there is a lack of good, original bands. But sadly such bands are not in demand. My band entered a contest that was supposed to uncover new, original bands. A band that won imitated a very famous Slovene band. Sure, they had different lyrics in that song and probably a bit different chord progression, but the whole song structure was the same, the whole stage act was the same, from their frontman's gestures to his tattoos, same as the frontman of that band. But they won. Such originality
Anyway, you can check Tina's song here if you want.

Why do you think those are new?

Sex appeal: Salome, Elvis' gyrating hips?
Bandwagon: Um, isn't that a given since you said "most acts"?
Nostalgia: Wagner, Grieg? Or "Strawberry fields forever"?
Having Fun: Chuck Berry's "My Ding-a-ling" wasn't?
Comparison: Like in Carmen?
Derogatory lyrics/contents: I'll just leave this here:

People always like to act that having songwriters and producers ghost write songs and put pretty faces at the front with little musical talent is a new thing to, when really we know it's been going on for years, like the rest you have mentioned.

it's been happening for some time now, but the 'talent requirement' is at an all-time low. At least Elvis could sing.

I'm just stating the obvious outright sex appeal, bandwagon, nostalgia, having fun, comparison, derogatory lyrics/content etc. etc. All of your examples were said to have fitted into these types at the time and looking back from the present but I personally think they don't. I think you have to create new categories for Elvis, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, and definitely the last video because so much has changed. Present day opinions vs. past opinions and present day past opinions vs. future opinions are like comparing apples to oranges, in my opinion. Call me naive but it's the truth.

I honestly think that real talent comes from the heart and soul. No matter what high tech studio "tricks" they do nowadays, it can't compare to real, God given talent.

Nobody, NOBODY, even to this day, can sing like this legendary female artist. Autotune didn't exist back then. It was just Patsy Cline backed by a band and/or orchestra strings.

Skip ahead to 3:30 in the video... Hear the heartbreaking "inhale" that she did? That was real, not studio enhanced, or anything. It was Patsy Cline actually crying at the end of the lyrics.

Patsy was amazing. KD Laing is one of my favorite female singers. She gives me goose bumps almost every time.

In reference to "awesome female singers", I think Ronnie Spector and Aretha Franklin should be mentioned. Neither of which would do to well with Antares Autotune.

I have come to see that many of "todays" artists are actually very talented people. Its the producers, agents, and managers breathing down their necks saying "No! No talent is permitted! You must use syths and auto tune! Because that is what is profitable! " Example is imagine dragons, their hit songs absolutely suck, the most horrible keyboard and auto tune trash imaginable.

Hey, now. Don't put keyboard and autotune in the same category. I like to think that Jon Lord is a different category than Lorde.

I don't understand how you can turn having fun into a negative. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say, but isn't the whole point of playing music to have fun? Isn't that why people fall in love with it?

Kind of off topic, but you live in Slovenia?! Your country was getting a lot of publicity here in Canada during the Olympics. Not sure if you're a hockey fan, but it was great to see Slovenia play well on such a big stage. I'm a huge fan of Anze Kopitar.
Back on topic now... what you describe seems to be very standard these days. Kind of depressing.
