I'm putting a neck on a strat body but the neck has no mounting screw holes drilled in it. I've heard you can put the high and low E strings on the neck and clamp it to the body to see if they go off the fretboard and use that to see where the mounting holes need to go. I was just wondering if there was a better technique out there for installing a neck on my strat project.

I'd use a piece of transparent paper to put in the slot and make a tranparency of the correct placement. Transfer that to the new neck. When drilling, make sure you use a drill bit slightly smaller then the screws.

I did it with the method I listed. I put a piece of wood over the frets and clamped the neck onto the body and drilled the holes through the screw holes on the body. It worked fine

When I have replaced them I did it as you said and clamped the neck
to the body then installed the two E strings and then marked were
the holes had to go. Then removed the neck put the mouting screw
through the body measured how deep it will go into the neck then
marked my drill bit with a piece of tape for the thickness of the body
and depth needed to be drilled into neck. Then drill the hole before
putting back on the body not while on the body. Also pre thread the
holes with some parffin before you put it on the body. You should
not drill while it is on the body plus it is nice to have a cheapo drill
press to make sure you drill straight.
