I read the introduction. This thread was created to open a dialog concerning options that people would like to see added to the "build your own" tool. All I have is Fender ('79 P Bass, Marcus Miller V, Highway 1 Strat, pics coming soon), until my SB5000 arrives, so I'm hoping Fender goes further with the "build your own". I would like to use the "build your own" to purchase a bass.

What's the point of building a guitar with the choices that are offered when I can buy one of those at Guitar Center? There aren't any incentives to having to wait 3 months for a plain guitar. I think that the build your guitar feature we become very popular when more options are added, but right now its just something to play around with in my opinion. There aren't too many advatages to buying a guitar using this tool. Fender has tons of colors/finishes on guitars that aren't made by the custom shop. As a matter of fact, how many custom shop guitars have you come across? Carvin has a number of options available when building a guitar online (that's why I bought one) and the guitars are reasonably priced. I'm not comparing Carvin to Fender, I'm just pointing out that having more options can be done.

As for the Custom Shop ..... :?:
This....

It's a 56 NOS in case you cannot tell..

And No... You're not going to buy a " Design Your Own " @ Guitar Center.... Sort of pointless to ask for features and include a middle man....

Carvin.... I'm well aware of since the 70's, having played their guitars they are nice, but we here are kind of Fender biased....

Since this was in reply to your 6th post, perhaps you might want to click on the Introduction thread and try to be a bit less acidic in introducing yourself...

To TheKingOfPain.. I understand your point but I think Fender is trying to offer another avenue.
It's definitely not for everyone, is minimalist but then again, because of the numbers of potential customers, there isn't much sense in offering the same colors as the normal production runs...
That is not what this " Design Your Own " is, or at least seems to be ...

Yes there could be some tweaking and I think we'll see that eventually.... But we also need to keep in mind that as large as Fender Inc. is, minute changes are not up to just one person...
But perhaps Mike Eldred would be best in answering these types of Q & A's ...

I think for an opening attempt it's a good one. I think for the modern style instruments this is honestly a great thing. I think a one size fits all doesn't really translate to the vintage style instruments, though. I think the market for the American Vintage instruments is much different than that of the Standard or Special. As you said, we'll probably be seeing tweaks as they go. Also, You are correct. In a large manufacturing environment these kinds of projects go through very carefully laid out procedures just to examine the feasibility. Every aspect of the project and everyone it touches has input and has to buy in. While FMIC definitely COULD do what I laid out. That doesn't mean that they will.

Mike Eldred would be a good person to tap in this regard. However, I don't think offering custom colors across the American Vintage line would really be much competition for the Custom Shop. The reality is that most people who would want say a Shell Pink 58 Precision might be willing to pay an extra 100-200 bucks above the base model price. However, most of them probably aren't going to be willing to shell out an extra 2-5k to get it from the Custom Shop. Which are exactly what their choices are now if they want an official Fender product with the warranty. You either buy the stock colors, and lose out on the custom color even though it's being used on other models in the same product line. Or you dig deep and spend an extra 2k atleast just to get the same bass built by a team of CS builders with that color.

I think resurrecting the old custom color upcharge is not only doable, but it would allow Fender to get a piece of the aftermarket custom body market that is thriving simply because they don't do it. There are a lot of players who have custom vintage spec bodies made for their Fender guitars and basses in custom colors by independent businesses simply because Fender refuses to offer people what they want. Each body costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Easily double what even a 10% upcharge would cost, and the body isn't covered by the Fender warranty. Fender could easily charge the 10% because people will still be getting what they want at half price. They're also getting the Fender warranty with it.

Hopefully if this sticks. Fender will see the opportunities that are hidden in it.

If you follow the button at the top of the page to go to the "Design your own" you will see that you can design not only Strats and Teles, but Precision and Jazz bass models. Fender did not forget about us.

It's possible to have a Precision with a tuxedo Jazz neck but the American designer won't allow you to add a Jazz pickup in the bridge and the possibility to have passive (2 volumes, master tone) or active electronics (volume, pan, 3-band EQ) as opposed to the more expensive CS instruments.

Correct. Once you get into body routing I think they draw the line and for good reason. Though there is an American Precision bass model that has this routing. Who knows? Someday we may see it. Of course if we get to that point Fender might end up doing almost all their business online. Not that it'd be a bad thing, imo. Though I think buying an instrument is one of those things when you're starting out you need to make decisions in a hands on type of environment. At this point I know what I do and don't like. So I'd have no qualms about ordering from Fender in this manner.

You've hit on a critical point.... Sooner if not later, 95% of our instrument purchase will be done online... One of the present drawbacks is that we attempt to analyze /assess our new instruments thru a One dimensional system ( desktop ) whereas we are most certainly Three dimensional ( if that makes sense ) .
Perhaps someday soon, the hologram image will become completely interactive where one can be in Saskatchewan and actually touch, feel and play the Corona based model and order according to the feedback....
( Getting a bit ahead here, happens if I spend the night watching Sci Fi ... )

Reality wise I always prefer to walk in a brick and mortar and play, feel, intimately connect with the instrument, be it a Larrivee acoustic, an early 20th century violin or most recently ( yesterday ) the 50's Road Worn Black Stratocaster I just bought and will pick up in a week or so...

To be honest, I actually like the DYO as in being able to personalize say a Deluxe without needing to go thru a multitude of requests or just having to order it CS....
Time will tell how this works, but to this I will say to Fender....

Thank You... Someone is finally listening... 8)

Yeah man I checked out the "Design your own" and I was excited to see the layout. I really want to build a 5 String which is why I made this thread. I also want a couple more options which are minor. I really like the feel and sound of the Fender 5 String. My next bass will probably be a Fender 5 ("Build Your Own" when they offer a 5 string model or used Victor Bailey).

Ah, I didn't realize a 5 string was a requirement. Someday we might get there. I think it'll depend on how successful this is overall.

I love this new feature, for a lefty it's wonderful to be able to select from more than two colors much less all of the other options. A bit pricey but kudos to Fender for this great idea!! I have a model saved and ready to order, need to sell something first to make room for it.
