Last year I was one of the first people to get on the reserve list for immediate mailing of the new Andy Babiuk and Greg Prevost book "The Stones" Gear".Andy wrote "The Beatles Gear" several years ago and it was a incredibly detailed book with a lot of technical data in it too, regarding recording techniques etc. This book is hard cover and weighs at least 10 lbs and probably closer to 12,it's much heavier than my Les Paul.I don't browse through books when I get them as I prefer to see each page for the first time as I read the book.I know that from the fantastic attention to factual details in the Beatles book, this book will be over the top when it comes to quality and detail in its almost 700 pages.

Sounds very cool, Guitar Player mag had some blurbs from the book.

Will you read the book to us, Uncle Derek?

Really, though--looking forward to your review.

I am sure it pales in the level of detail to the book your getting, but Keith Richards' autobiography had quite a bit of details on gear and playing. I have read a bunch of these rock-n-roll autobiographies, and the one from "Keef" was one of the best.

I bought Keef's autobiography but just had to put it down.To this very day both he and Jagger make it appear to anyone who doesn't know the real story of The Stones, that he and Mick were solely responsible for getting the Stones off the ground, nothing could be farther from the truth.Brian Jones took it upon himself to rent out the back room of The Bricklayer's Arms to hold auditions,Ian Stewart was the first person that Brian picked and they developed a love/hate relationship that lasted until Brian's death.Although they dearly loved each other as friends and musicians,Stu always thought that Brian could be a pretty arrogant A-hole.Mick was eventually passed to become a member but the rest who had been picked promptly quit when Keef came along because he rubbed them the wrong way,Mick wouldn't join without Keef so Brian relented. The Stones were totally Brian's baby and they were always billed in their early days as Brian Jones and his Rollin' Stones (sic).AS time wore on Mick and Keef gradually usurped control of The Stones from Brian through a slow, incidious and cynically methodical plan that eventually drove him into a deep depression that sent him spiralling down a path of self destruction and drug and alcohol abuse.Ironically in the two or three months before his death he had all but kicked his dependency on booze and drugs and was the happiest that he had been in years as he and some very close musician friends and even a foreign heir to a throne had a plan in the works to bring together virtuoso musicians of different ethnicities and musical genres and do compilations of world music to educate the world about the beautiful music that came from other countries.

The fact that up until I put down Richard's book(about 130 pages or so)he hadn't mentioned their true founder Brian even once just turned me from the book. This also didn't escape the notice of the Stone's long time manager Andrew Loog Oldham either and I don't believe that he was too impressed with Richard's downplaying of Brian's huge contribution not only to forming the band but also from saving what were to become some of their biggest hits from the editing room floor by rearranging them or changing the orchestration and/or tempo.Keef may have a memory like a bear trap but he conveniently forgets some very important facts and people.

Yes, but ... I think when you read any of these books, one must always keep in mind who wrote it -- in that it will always capture the biases of the author. That all being said, I found the book to be a very entertaining and informative read. Out of all the similar books I have read, Keith's was - by far - the most informative technically on gear, playing techniques, and songwriting -- in addition to being a very captivating read. Just my opinion ...

Over the years I have read and listened to many first-hand accounts from people both in the Stone's and Brian's Inner Sanctums and every single one of them is at odds with much with much of what Richard's says when it comes to the founding of the Stone's.There are literally hundreds of pictures both in print and on the web etc. showing the early nightclub posters, newspaper and music magazine ads and handbills etc. billing the band as "Brian Jones and his Rollin' Stones" (sic) and even such influential members of those very close to The Stone's as their long time manager Andrew Loog Oldham have contested many of Keef's "facts" about the founding of the Stones and Brian's overall contribution.Oldham and many others have also said that it was Brian who many times came to the rescue and took Jagger and Richards songs that were about to be scuttled and refreshed and rehashed them and even made them into million sellers.Jagger and Richards have downplayed Brian's huge contribution to The Stone's for good reason, most fans of today were either too young or weren't around at all when all the ugliness of Brian's being ostracized from the Stones and the undermining of his control and leadership of the Stones was going on and it would do a lot of damage to their worldwide adoration and adulation if what really happened and is historically factual ever became common knowledge. If anyone has a vested interest in twisting the truth or not telling it at all,it's Jagger and Richards who would benefit most from it,as the alternative would be very detrimental to their basking in glory as being such great guys and rock icons.
