This is a great idea Fender, bravo! Lefthanders like me appreciate the ability to get so many options. My only caveat is what if I don't like it, can I return it? That's what Carvin does, I have two of their guitars and cannot say enough about them - on another forum of course <ahem>.

Great idea! If the idea takes hold, I hope the plan is to expand choices, i.e. I'd like to customize a Jazzmaster and add block markers or design a Tele with Wide Range humbuckers. I imagine Lace Sensors are out of the question on the Strats.

Not currently, unfortunately ... :( But perhaps at some point in the future!

It's gotta happen brad, Fender are limiting to only ONE country- if it's opened to the rest of the world, the $$$$ will flow.. And this will catch on real fast.

Same can be said for the online store. Nothing worse than having to wait months for a specific product through an 'authorised dealer', when a seller will deliver within 7-10 business days internationally via Ebay.

I know times are tough at Fender, but someone who makes these decisions really needs to get with the times.

Cheers.

I noticed some missing stuff. E.g. the 65 pickups are missing although the 65 transition neck with rosewood lam is there.

Needs moar colors.

Not that I haven't made some sexy beasts using what's there :)

Carvin needs one of these, my DC125C is feeling a little crowded with the two Strats that have moved in >.>

As a lefty, I love this feature. I am trying to get an American Deluxe with all the extras in the finish I want but the American Design experience is the closeset I can come to it.
Except you can't get the electronic options of the American Deluxe on an American Design experience guitar. Frustrating.....I suppose I can buy the switches and wire it up myself.....

Some items that might need to be include in your options lists:

1. Nitro finishes

2. More color options

3. Neck humbuckers for Telecasters-a.k.a. Andy Summers, Albert Collins models.

4. 9.5 radius fingerboards as well as compound radius fingerboards

5. double bound bodies.

I don't think the American Design Experience was meant to replace the Custom Shop!

I don't know. Much of what he listed is already done on production models in the same factory. Seems to make this not be about replacing the Custom Shop. I think people are just looking for options that would appeal to the target customers they seem to be trying to appeal to. Sure, if you're into modern spec Fenders this is great. The vintage stuff? Not so much. Especially for the price tag.

The fact that you can order CS pick ups already. Well, for the guitars, at least. Seems to make most of the above requests not very "out there". No one is asking for hand crafted Custom Shop level attention. They are asking for more production options that would fit in better with the options they already have.

For instance, the Vintage Series necks, but for some reason can't get Nitro bodies is a little weird. Both are part of the production runs. The fact that if you want an AVS 58 Precision bass in a production run custom color nitro finish like Shell Pink, Firemist Gold, or Faded Sonic Blue that you'd need to pay a 2k dollar up charge is a tad ridiculous. You can get the vintage series necks, pick ups, and hardware. However, you can't get an appropriate body. Ordering a Vintage Series neck on a Poly body isn't something that most of the Vintage Series fans are likely to jump on.

The Nitro colors are done on production run models. The next logical step to offering Vintage Spec necks would be to offer the matching bodies. That's not going to put the Custom Shop in any jeopardy. At all. Offering artist series pick ups and CS pick ups that are also used in production run models only makes sense. It's already done for the Strat and Tele in a limited scope. Why not extend that to the basses with other offers, and expand the guitars?

I understand that for guitarists who are used to getting tons of options thrown at them regularly these nit picks might seem petty. However, as a bassist who prefers the vintage spec basses this is what makes or breaks the deal. For all of us who would love to be able to order a custom color AVS P bass, but can't really justify spending 4k on a Custom Shop bass just to get a factory run instrument with a period correct custom color. Because that's what our options are now. Or get an aftermarket replacement body. Which is the usual route. Offering the Nitro Custom Colors on the Vintage Series bodies would be INSANELY popular. Much more popular than ordering a vintage spec bass or guitar with a downgraded finish for almost the same price.

I love the concept, but realistically, isnt' it cheaper to just buy Warmoth, Allparts, etc and save some money? You can buy brand new necks from reputuable Ebay stores and buy the aftermarket parts elsewhere and still have money left over. I love the concept, but I think the cost is so close to a Custom Shop, is it really worth it? My "dream" Stratocaster is basically a SRV neck on a righthanded tremolo seafoam green body with chrome hardware and a parchment pickguard. I can eBay shop for all that and come under $1,000.

I can see it from both sides.

First, I think the plus is that you get the Fender Warranty and the guarantee of workmanship. Sure, you can get build parts Fenders, or buy aftermarket parts, and honestly. That's definitely a cost effective way to go in the short term. Or if you plan on keeping the bass or guitar forever. However, that "parts" guitar that you just payed 900 bucks for isn't going to likely bring that in case of resale. Plus, you have to assemble it yourself, and you never know about the skill of the person that disassembled the original basses. None of those parts or work is guaranteed.

That being said. I think if Fender really wants to compete with that market, and they can and should. Then they need to actually offer what the people who buy those aftermarket bodies are looking for. Why on earth would I order a 1700 dollar bass with a poly finish? That's crazy. As you said. I could buy an AVS 58 P neck and loaded guard off of ebay. Then buy the hardware, covers and G&G case seperately. All I need to do at that point is get a really nice Nitro custom color body made. Boom! An "American Vintage" P bass in a custom color I didn't need to bleed out 5 grand for through the Custom Shop.

I think Fender is missing what people really want out of this. They want to be able to mix and match production finishes and production parts. Like a 63RI P body with a 58 neck. Or maybe a custom color 52 Tele in one of the production run custom colors from the other AVS guitars? Hell, Why not a 58 Tele in Shell pick with a black guard and a 52 neck? Seems pretty awesome to me.

I get that you'd be starting at the AVS cost and paying an upcharge for the "parts swap" labor and running it as a special run. However, I think a lot of people would gladly pay that. Like a LOT of people. I love my AVS 57RI. I'd love to get a 58 in my stable, but honestly. I already have a White Blonde 57. I don't want both basses to look the same. I have no interest in 3TS and I'm really iffy on owning ANOTHER black bass. I've owned enough in my lifetime.

I jsut can't see myself taking the plunge on one, and I really want to. Especially with those same tired options for 2 grand. However, there is NO WAY IN HELL I am going to pay the CS 5 grand to team build me a production run bass just so I can get a custom color on it. That's madness. Custom Colors used to be a 5% upcharge. I see no reason this can't be brought back with the current years Custom Color offerings. Hell, 10% even. It's better than paying 150% and going to the CS for a production run spec bass.

I think, should this end up being successful. (and honestly for the guys who dig the modern spec stuff it's an awesome thing!) Then we should see it expanded. I just think in an effort to minimize their risk upfront they ended up missing the boat on a lot of what people really go after in the aftermarket.
