rather than hijack the Billy Squire thread i wanted to start a different one. As an upcoming topic for one of my weekly podcasts i am going to discuss MTV (and i guess all the different video based stations not just MTV). Some of the very positive points of early MTV were variety and exposure to numerous different bands. What are your negative and positive points about Music Videos and channels based on them? i am only asking so i can have different thoughts and viewpoints about it. Not in any way looking to start a flame war one way or the other, there is no right or wrong here.

I always thought fairly positively of the early years of MTV (not the new "reality based" crap). thanks for your input guys.

Negative? The bands playing on playback, definitely (only the singing was done live). There was a show, Top of The Pops or something like that, where many, many bands were invited and all had to deal with playing on playback. Nirvana didn't want to. You should check out what Kurt did during their Smells Like Teen Spirit, hilarious  Also pay close attention to the lyrics. Think they were banned from there afterwards :P

MTV was something interesting to watch when music videos were being played on the channel. It (MTV) changed, sometime in the mid to late 90s, into drek.

I don't like when music channels rotate the same handful of vidoes over and over.
Even the request shows only play whats on the charts.
Back in the 80's and 90's there were genre specific shows which exposd me to a lot of new music.
Today there is a lack of music on music channels.

We had cable when MTV first hit the air and I watched all the time. I have a lot of Vcr tapes of videos that I burned to Dvd's. When the focus left Rock&Roll I Stopped watching it. Today I watch Palladia and sometimes Vh1. MTV screwed themselves when they started playing non-musical content. I haven't even clicked on it years, years.

+1

Once upon a time, MTV was true musical entertainment. But their content morphed into nothing more than a cultural pollutant after 1989.

was never a big fan of mtv. seems as though people came up with an idea for a video first, and the song was made around it. just my .02

reminds me of when disco hit. seems like every band had to have a disco type song, and many great live venues became discos.

I loved MTV for the first two or three years. I can mark its downward slide for me when the "Thriller" video came out. If you look at the very early videos, they were very low budget, which forced creativity. Many of the early videos were done by people early in their careers, and they would take chances and experiment with new ideas. A lot of them stunk, but some were really good. In the early days most record execs had never heard of music videos. After Mr. Jackson spent a million dollars on Thriller, when most budgets were around twenty thousand, it got the attention of the corporate types and it all turned to cr@p. After a short time it seemed like all videos were nothing more that shooting flames, explosions and half naked women. I also remember that some of the early videos where created from concert footage, I liked that. I lived in a small mid west town and did not get to see many bands perform, and it gave you a chance to see them play.

I don't even watch it any more. 'Reality TV' took over for MTV when they introduced 'The Real World', I guess they made more money off those terrible shows than playing music videos. VH1 used to be good too, but all the personality is gone now.

One of their editors goes by "Mr. Pain". I'm not joking

And he was wearing terminator sunglasses when I had to go in his room to provide tech support. I had a hard time keeping a straight face when he introduced himself.

First when videos became popular I have to admit that I found some of them quite entertaining but as time wore on they became what appeared to be nothing more than quasi-porn as they seemed more interested in the video content with very skimpily dressed nubile young women than in the artists or their music-that is unless the artist too was one of the just-shy-of-naked young women.I haven't tuned into any of the MTV or in Canada,Much Music, type channels for several years as the last time I looked it appeared that the channels could be easily renamed Flix for Wankers,as much of the music was just a vehicle for the "baby blue" videos.

remember when they drilled this one into the ground? You couldn't watch an hour of MTV without seeing it at least once.
