I just realized my guitar is half Stratocaster half SG.

The body looks a little like an Epiphone Wilshire:

Sort of. Bottom is axe shaped.

Really lame thread title, in more ways than one.

Besides the lame title, the guitar pictured looks nothing like a Strat or SG.

True, it doesn't look like either one. But it's a double-cutaway thin mahogany body with a mahogany set-neck that joins the body around the 19th/20th fret with rosewood fretboard, Guild's version of the TOM bridge and stoptail, with an angled 3x3 head with no scarf joint and a truss rod that's exactly like Gibson's truss rod. I can see lots of SG similarities in the specs. With a pair of humbuckers it would sound almost identical to an SG if you closed your eyes.

And it has three Strat-type pickups with the bridge pickup angled and a 5-way(?) blade switch. (Although the pickups are much closer together than on a Strat -- the neck pickup on a Strat is where the 24th fret is on that guitar -- so the quack tones would be a lot different than a Strat and the only one that might sound pretty similar to a Strat would be the pickup.)

Yeah, it's pretty much a stretch to say it's like an SG crossed with a Strat. But it is an '80s attempt at putting vaguely Strat-ish tones in a vaguely Gibson-esque guitar.

It doesn't have the most defining characteristics of either the SG nor the Strat.
SG: An elevated bridge with elevated HH pups.
SC: A fourth harmonic placed neck pickup (squealies), and an almost-6th/almost-7th harmonics placed mid pup (quacks and amp feedback).

It's an uncommon plank, and one I think is well fitted with its player. He seems very comfortable with it, and produces good noise!

Stratocaster stuff: Upper horn, body contours, 3 singles, a 5 way switch.

SG stuff: Lower horn, the sharper body looks, set neck construction, a thin neck, 3x3 tuners, the bridge and 24 frets. Also, the short scale.

I guess I could say it's more SG, but that's how genetics works. You know, we all have taken after our mother or father in some ways.

  • SGs don't necessarily have thin necks. It may be thinner than an LP, but a standard SG has a fatter neck than a standard modern Strat.
  • 3x3 tuners? Um, you got a nine string?
  • The bridge may Tune-o-matic style, but what one would think of first with an SG bridge is the Baba Yaga mount:

I'd say that your guitar is almost entirely, but not quite, unlike an SG.
