I just play my guitar without thinking too much.

I know I'm playing it right if I like the resulting sound.

Nobody in the audience (outside of the rare well-educated or well-trained musician) says, "I'm so glad he played the Pythagorian mode similar to the chants sung by Tibetan-Jamaican Muslim Shamans during that guitar solo...it wouldn't have worked otherwise!"*

The audience says, "Dang, that boy can play--cool solo!"

I'm playing to entertain (1) myself and (2) the general audience...unless it's a paying gig, and those two are reversed in order. I'm not trying to impress the well-trained music theory snob.

If it is important to (or entertains) you to quantify such things, Goodonya and keep on rockin'...however, many/most of my guitar heroes didn't/couldn't do so, so it doesn't matter to me. If it sounds good, it IS good, no matter if the person is playing it "right" or not.

*yes, I know that is all made up; note the "Sarcasm" font.

So you're with PIERCE on this one or all of the above?

Unless I specifically say, "Read between the lines," what you see is what you get.

I've expressed my opinion about going beyond this basic truth:

IF IT SOUNDS GOOD, IT IS GOOD.

Over and out.

Fair enough then.

Well I guess my question wasn't specific enough, as I meant to stay in the realm of Western Music. See if that's any help.

Also, I specifically meant as just a chord not a chord in a song. Does that help?

If you are trying to blanket all chords under one question then it's entirely pointless considering whats important changes whether its a power chord, a minor chord, a 7th, a whatever.
