I quite often touch the body of the guitar / other strings but only lightly so I wouldn't call it anchoring. It depends what I'm playing I guess, sometimes I'll be completely free, othertimes I'll unconciously fall back into anchoring

Weird, is this something learned by lessons?

I've been playing for about 4 years self-taught, and this isn't something I've ever really done. At least not consciously. :?

Hello Fenderwhite1,

I don't do it,
but a big time anchorman that comes to mind
was Wes Montgumery
He had a heart shaped inlay on the
soundboard of his L-5 to anchor his fingers.

Cheers.

I used to do that, but now I hold my palm on the strings to mute them. I like it this way and now there are no unwanted sounds. Only nice clean notes.

I used to learn guitar before going over to learn bass.. I'm wondering.. Does it matter? Don't mean to sound rude, but I'm wondering what the difference is, anchoring or not.

One of my friends did teach me to anchor my middle, ring and pinky fingers though, when i was learning guitar. I didn't always listen to him because I found it highly uncomfortable, having shorter than usual fingers. I realise i did subconsciously anchor my picky though. Someone I felt it gave me some form of stability.

Ok.....since my last post, I've discovered that I don't anchor at all. I never thought about it, but since this question was asked, I actually looked to see. Guess it was just something that I never thought about. Just did what came naturally.

I have no Idea whether my right hand is Anchored or not :? It palm mutes, finger picks, taps, pinches, and works the wang bar and the controls when it's supposed to, but I don't think about it too much.

I was checking again... I put my palm on the strings to mute them and my little finger and the one next to him (whats his name?) are anchored. I guess I don't really think about that, is it even important?

Why would you do that? If you play a Strat your bridge is right there by the body, and you rest your palm on the bridge so it's easy to palm mute when desired. Putting a finger on the body would really slow me down.

Sometimes I do, sometimes not. It's not really a conscious thing--it just depends if it works better or not.

And when I taught guitar I did teach it was okay to anchor a finger on the guitar in certain situations.

I can just see if any of those kids had later teachers who cursed their previous teacher for showing them that.

If it helps you play better--it's not bad technique. Most of the so-called "proper" technique is helpful, but you have to be able to bend those rules every now & then.

Of course when I play classical I don't anchor my hand. If I'm playing big chords--I don't. But if I'm playing single notes--I probably am--and it doesn't hinder my string muting.

So try it both ways and make sure it's not a conscious thing, but something you just know and do because it fits.

Guitar works that way.

+1 except for the teaching part. I'm more of a student than a teacher. Bless all the happy teachers.
