This morning I went to my local Mom and pop music store that I have patronized since the first opened 22 years ago and bought a new Jimi Hendrix strap and a new pedal from money that my two darling daughters gave me for my birthday-they know that I only want musical gear for any special occasion-anyway I picked up an Electro Harmonix Worm after trying it out in the store. When I got it home and played it for a good bit longer,I figured it's not quite up to the standards of the vintage E-H pedals that I own and have decided to bring it back tomorrow and maybe buy a pedal by my old standby,Vox like one of their excellent multi effects pedals. The Worm is a decent pedal but the intensity levels are very limited on the vibe setting especially. It has a auto-wah, phaser, tremolo and vibe setting but neither of them exhibits a deep intensity like E-H has in their old Bad Stone,Electric Mistress and the modulation that the original Memory Man Deluxe had.If the intensity was heavier it would be an ideal multi mod pedal but with such weak intensity,it just doesn't cut it for me.

While trying out the pedal in the store however I fell madly in love with the guitar that I tried it out with-a beautiful Gibson Firebird V with mini-hums and it sounded and played incredible but the price is what threw me for a loop,it was only $1,600 and as far as I'm concerned a Les Paul couldn't hold a candle to it.If I hadn't spent so much money on other gear this year,I easily could've sprung for it but unfortunately I'm not clairvoyant and consequently must take my chances when the dreaded GAS raises its ugly head and makes me do reckless things with my money. If any of you folks would like to chip in together and get me one for my birthday,I wouldn't mind it being a few days late.LOL of course.

Ha!! the Firebird strikes again!

Same exact thing happened to me. I tried one out and fell in love with it. Only difference is I was trying out amps. It is easily the best guitar for feel or tone I've ever played. Then I asked how much... $1300. Ouch.

Fast forward a few weeks to Christmas, and an unexpectedly large monetary gift. You KNOW I ran to that mom and Pop and bought that guitar! Gorgeous vintage sunburst finish, mini buckers, and Steinberger tuners. ( NOT the clunky banjo tuners at the end of an already vulnerable headstock/neck joint) It even smells good! Off the rack setup was spot on- I didn't even have to tune it! I love how that striped neck through laminate looks.

Mine is a 2013 model. The hard case it comes with is a big improvement over the vintage ones. Those leave the headstock and most of the neck totally unsupported- no wonder it was common to break them IN the case...

Happy Birthday, and save up your pennies. You''l get one soon enough. I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do, once it's all yours! Whatever you do- don't test it out in the store on a Fender Blues Deluxe, Super Sonic 60, or any "tweed" style amp. You'll want the amp, too! I'd swear the Firebird was MADE to be played through a Fender amp.

Thanks guys,I have a Custom Shop '06 Epi Firebird but it has the Epi AlNiCo 5 regular sized ProBuckers. She sounds incredible but rather than sounding like a Firebird, she sounds just like a mid 60s SG-which isn't exacly a bad thing.Does anyone know if there are adapter kits available so that you can retro-fit mini-hums into the same space formerly occupied by Burstbuckers or Probuckers?Ever since I saw my guitar hero Brian Jones with a Firebird VII on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Firebird has been my Holy Grail guitar along with the '54 and "L" series Strat but I'd certainly settle for a Firebird V since another huge guitar hero of mine,Johnny Winter-uses one almost exclusively.

Wow thanks Blinkers-that's pretty cool, now all I need are 2 mini hums.In the mean time I brought back the E-H Worm today and picked up a really cool Yamaha Magicstomp multi effects unit and after just playing around with it for about 1/2 hour,I am really impressed. This little stomp box has a pile of pre-programmed effects in it and each one is tweakable by using the 3 control under the digital readout board. Some of the effects are really spacey and other-wordly and others are popular effects but are on par with top of the line models.I only paid $100 for the pedal because it was used-very lightly I might add but it lacks a user's manual. The guy at the store tried to find one on the web but had no luck-does anyone know where I can access Yamaha user's manuals? The salesman thought he had found one on the Yamaha site but it turned out to be a repair manual.

Nice!

It was my love of Skynyrd, and specifically Allen Collins that got me interested in Firebirds. Seeing Steve Winwood playing a non reverse one on Dear Mr Fantasy certainly didn't hurt- his tone on that song was epic!

I'm not really fond of the non-reverse 'bird at all,I don't know why Fender got its nose out of joint about the shape of the Firebird resembling their offset body cut-outs on the Jaguar and Jazzmaster in order to facilitate easier playing on the player's lap.Apparently Fender either threatened Gibson with a "Cease and Desist" order to stop production of the reverse body immediately or actually had one issued, either way Gibson complied, mostly because sales of the reverse were sluggish to say the least.

I remember seeing Traffic at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis back in '69. Steve played a Pelham Blue Firebird through an Acoustic 360. Awesome tone.

The Acoustic amps from the 60s and 70s were certainly fabulous amps and they really brought out crystal clear, clean signals from every instrument that was plugged into them. Therein lies a big part on my problem with them.In the mid 70s I was looking for a new gigging amp that was more portable and more powerful than my Traynor Custom Reverb which was only 35 W if I'm not mistaken, but it sounded incredible.Anyway I was trying out a Yamaha S S amp,a Fender Twin,A Peavey Deuce and a large 2-12 Acoustic combo. The Yamaha and the Acoustic both sounded incredibly clean-even at very high volume but neither of them was capable of any overdrive, although the Yamaha had a distortion effect that sounded really fake and artificial.Neither of them took distortion effects very well either so both of them were unfortunately out of the picture as at the time we were playing classic rock such Beatles,Hendrix,Uriah Heep, and current-at the time-stuff,Average White Band,ZZ Top,Mahogany Rush,Queen etc. so I needed an amp that could get raunchy-the Twin was also too clean unless you cranked it up to pain threshold volumes so the Peavey passed the audition. To this day,if I wanted a super clean amp an Acoustic would be my first choice.
