I quite like the 'Chainsaw' cases (SKB?) too.

They seem more balanced, less cumbersome.

I've heard they can warp and the latches aren't so great.

Not so with the pair I have.

cheers!

Hiscox Pro II, or Studiologic.

My guitars don't leave my house in anything else these days.

http://www.hiscoxcases.com/electric-guitar-cases.htm

Studiologic. Saw a baggage handler lob my guitar across a runway and watched it hit the tarmac with a crunch.
It broke one catch on the case, didn't scuff the shell of the case and the guitar was fine.
I use it to reach high shelves when I have it at home. They don't seem to be making them any more though.

Airline luggage handlers belong in one of Diane Fossey's primate studies......not booting bags and parcels around on the tarmac like they aspire to world-cup soccer competition.

Seats have been purchased for guitars so that they can fly alongside their owners. Many years ago, they told me, Mandolin Brothers, Staten Island once serviced Paul McCartney's bass. It came across the pond in the company of a courier in that fashion and returned, on the Concorde.

I think Zenbone is talking about this type of case, not the current huge rectangular SKB case:

Image

If you drive a small-ish car, the form-fit cases are much more convenient -- they'll fit in places where the traditional cases won't. If you drive a larger car or SUV that might not matter unless someone else gives you a ride in their small car.

I had traditional cases back in the '70s and '80s. Fender black tolex for my '75, an aftermarket tweed for my '80s partsocaster. Both cases had very sloppy fit -- the guitars could move around a lot and if the cases got banged hard enough to move the guitars forward the tips of the heads would actually compress what little padding there was enough to ram the tip of the head hard against the wood of the case. (The '75 also had a hinge rivet that was only partially expanded and it poked through the velour/velvet and took a big chip out of the guitar's nearly indestructible thick-skin finish.) Maybe current traditional cases are better, but my current main Strat has a form-fit red label case and I like it a lot better. Small, light, great protection.

Are current tweed cases lacquered? Mine wasn't and that was a big drawback -- I was afraid to take it to gigs in the rain.

One advantage to traditional cases is that the storage pocket is huge. Room enough for a strap, cables, spare strings, diagonal cutters, LPB-1, etc. The pocket on my form-fit is barely big enough for strings and the trem arm -- maybe a cloth strap too, but my leather strap is too bulky.

That's the type of case I'm referring to as well. They are shaped like the cases Strats were first supplied with. My Strat Plus case is has locks which are sturdier and a far superior lining to this one which my Deluxe VG Strat was supplied with.

Yep... Them's the ones I call the 'Chainsaw' cases... Saw others wrefer to them that way...

I got a pair in excellent condition and use them when taking my Teles from home.

At home, they stray in their traditional and SKB cases.

cheers!

Animals Arjay. Nothing more nothing less.
It's like watching them apes at the start of 2001 A Space Odyssey, where they go mad at the monolith. Seeing baggage handlers target personal possessions.

I just became the proud owner of

It'll be having it's own seat should I take it abroad.

Yup, that's the one i received with the guitar. It is a fine case, and much like others have said the latches do have to go in a specific order to work correctly. I suspect due to slight warping. I don't take the guitars out very much but i always ensure that the better ones have a case for them when i do. Duesenberg has it's own factory one (incredibly high quality), Jaguar Special HH has a white coffin case (please don't hate on it) that i customize to fit the jag horn so it is a perfect fit, the the chainsaw fender case for the deluxe but as stated if i do get the nice tweed/twill style the MIM strat will get the chainsaw one. Kinda makes sense to roll that way so i do retain the original with the guitar but just have a different strat in it.

Yeah once you are on that "NO FLY LIST" it is quite impossible to get off. Ask Yusef Islam (AKA Cat Stevens.)

Gee, I'm getting on a plane later this week, albeit sans guitar !

One of my closest friends, Bobby Islam, is a Bengali who came here for University (no scholarship... he paid to come). He has since become an American Citizen. He married another ex-pat Bengali who is a pretty well know Physician and Internist and also a US Citizen.

Unfortunately, Bobby gets stopped everytime he tries to board a plane. Why..?? His formal name on his US Passport is: Muhammad Islam !

Bobby says it's an inconvenience to be sure, but it's necessary. He is raising two children and he says that he wants them to live in a Safe country and if this is what it takes, he's OK with it.

cheers!

That poor guy. Travel has got to be a Nightmare for him.
Although the argument could be made if you were a Jihadist suicide bomber that would be the LAST alias you would land on.

I've had a few of those. There is more than one type. The one with the formed "rails" on the bottom seems to be sturdier than the one with out the rails and the slightly rounder corners. This one pictured appears to be the better one.

I still say the case for them to beat is the one PSR supplies with its high end guitas.

I assume you meant to type PRS and I agree those are very fine cases indeed. Nice snug fit with no wiggling about inside and a good sturdy shell and decent latches.
