recently i got a 2004 Strat deluxe that came with the fitted style case, i think it was the one it came in (black with the raised fender logo). I always kinda thought strats should arrive in style in the more classic tweed rectangle style hard case. What do you think? Is there any drawback to using one of the more classic cases? i would most likely just use the fitted one for my MIM strat

I used for a little while a Tweed G&G case for my American Standard. It came with an SKB case.
The design is different.
The SKB case it way more bigger than the tweed. In the end, I gave the tweed case to my friend because of thd damage it got.
Even thought the SKB case is bigger and heavier, It is more resistant than a Tweed case.
I recently got a Custom Strat and the seller traded the tweed case that camd with it to a beautiful Western leather styled G&G case. I love it!

In the end: Tweed cases are beautiful and quite light but are less resistant than the SKB cases Fender includes with the US series guitars. If you don't really care about damaging your case and if you like the tweedy look, go for one

I have three tweed cases and with proper care, I have not had a problem with any of them. Does the tweed take a bit more care? Yes, but they are worth it.

The best and most durable case I ever had was a Fender black tolex G&G. Easy to keep clean and pretty dang tuff.

FWIW

All nine of my Strats travel in G&G style and luxury. The coverings are determined by the historical era that each guitar depicts -- tweed for the '50s, brown Nubtex for the early '60s, and black or blonde Tolex for the mid '60s. SKB builds a fine case -- almost as airline-proof as an Anvil. But I'm purist when it comes to my Fender gear. And in any case I'll never set foot aboard an aircraft again. So the choice (for me) is simple.

This. I'm the same way with my P basses. If you are going for the better protection the brand new cases that come with the Standard guitars are pretty damn hard to beat. Definitely more protection than the old school tweed and tolex. That being said, my Antigua P and Classic 70's P have the appropriate Fender Logo black tolex and my AVS 57 RI has it's tweed and I wouldn't have it any other way. Also, I won't be flying again either. So that is of no concern. Nice to see I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Yeah once you are on that "NO FLY LIST" it is quite impossible to get off. Ask Yusef Islam (AKA Cat Stevens.)

For some unknown reason, the molded "red tag" cases
are fetching big $ in the online classys and fleabay.

Any case that protects your guitar is fine by me. Protection
is the main thing, not who made it, but I am partial to the
vintage black tolex G&G cases.

Gee, I'm getting on a plane later this week, albeit sans guitar !

One of my closest friends, Bobby Islam, is a Bengali who came here for University (no scholarship... he paid to come). He has since become an American Citizen. He married another ex-pat Bengali who is a pretty well know Physician and Internist and also a US Citizen.

Unfortunately, Bobby gets stopped everytime he tries to board a plane. Why..?? His formal name on his US Passport is: Muhammad Islam !

Bobby says it's an inconvenience to be sure, but it's necessary. He is raising two children and he says that he wants them to live in a Safe country and if this is what it takes, he's OK with it.

cheers!

Btw, I have both the G&G Tweed and the SKB. In terms of protection, I'd say same-same. The SKB is likely more durable, except the latches.

But, I was given a new Fender Custom Shop Blues Reunion gig bag and this thing is seriously TOUGH !! This semi-rigid Gig Bag is mostly a CS Monogrammed version of Blues Reunion's Midnight Series Continental Electric Guitar Case.

Fender Custom Shop Blues Reunion Gig Bag:

It has great 1" thick high-density closed cell foam, a neck brace suspension system with adjustable, locking security strap, Rubberized headstock pocket and endpin. BR claims: " The EVA impact panels offer enough protection to survive a 40-foot drop without so much as a nick or scratch..."

I'm not sure I'd check a guitar w/ an airline in anything short of a Karura or ATA case, but for getting to & from, and short of someone stepping on it or driving over it (which a G&G or SKB wouldn't survive either), this thing will provide as good or better protection. Plus it comes with nicely padded shoulder straps (and a hideaway zip pocket when you don't need them).

At an MSRP of $270.00  , this thing ought to be good... and it is.

Would I own one if it hadn't been given to me? Probably not. But, then I don't gig regularly or move my guitars very often, except to/from lessons.

OTOH, if I did, I'd give this one some thought because it's lighter, can be carried on your back, and offers all the protection anyone short of a Musician on a World Tour would likely need.

cheers!

I have both a G&G twill/tweed case and an SKB square case. The quality differences between the two are night and day - in favor of the SKB case.
You must have a different SKB case than I do, because mine is shorter than the G&G case, and fits flat on the trunk of my car. The G&G case doesn't - it has to be at an angle resting on the wheel wells.
The locks on the SKB case kind of suck - flimsy and prone to opening themselves. But at least they align, unlike on the G&G case.
The only thing the G&G case has in favor is that it has a lid on the accessories box. The fastener for the lid doesn't align, though - it's about a centimeter(!) off. But to compensate, the SKB case has two accessory boxes. But without lids, alas.

I have 4 gig bags (some better than others) and 1 black hard case. Everyones preference for the better cases in regards to guitar safety is spot on. I am usually asking the dealer to throw in a case when I buy a guitar lol.

You could do like Jaco Pastorius and just carry it everywhere with you caseless. Out to dinner, onto the bus, to the grocer. Jaco's Jazz Bass went everywhere he went until that one time he took it to the park. He got distracted for a moment and it disappeared off a Central Park bench. Decades later it was located in a pawn shop a few blocks from Central Park. The instrument known as "The Bass of Doom" is now in possession of Robert Trujillo who claims he "recovered it for the Pastorius family" yet he still has it and has been seen playing it in public with Metallica.

I have a number of G&G cases but have you looked at the newer ones? They aren't what they used to be. The dimensions are a little different, the layouts are a little different and the materials are different too. I wanted to buy a G&G for my Strat Partsocaster project but when I looked at them I was put off and found something else instead. It seemed to me that the quality went down and the price went up.

Those cases have certainly evolved. I have a Strat Plus case from '97 which I assume SKB did for Fender. I call them the 'machine gun' cases as compared with the classic rectangular G&G's The locks on the '97 are far superior to the similar case they supplied with my '08 FSR Deluxe VG. Make you wonder. I still say the case for them to beat is the one PSR supplies with its high end guitas.
