Leo had been suffering from the lingering effects of an infection he'd picked up while sailing his boat in and around Baja California waters several years previously. He'd had few days off from work since starting his radio and phonograph business shortly after the end of WWII and felt that he'd taken the Fender Electric Instrument Company as far as he could. He was fatigued and tired. And tired people often make foolish mistakes. No matter. When CBS began actively courting him to sell in the spring of 1964, Leo conferred with his most trusted advisor Don Randall who was the principal architect of the sale terms. Randall drove a hard bargain with William Paley's negotiating team and Leo Fender made an equitable profit from selling the company his visions had built, reportedly some $15,000,000.

Fender was an entrepreneur, not a craftsman.
He sold the company because he thought that's how he could make the most money.

For the same reason we sold out to China. Money.

Someone was once was asked, "How much money is enough money?", to which they replied, "Just a little bit more."

Interesting, after leading the company into the swamp, it became Randall and associates who pulled the company out of the quicksand.

Which luthier did he apprentice under? Did he produce a journeyman piece?
Did he even cut a guitar body himself, or make technical draughts?

He was an entrepeneur and inventor, and had craftsmen working for him. Nothing wrong with that.

Leo was a little bit of everything......inventor, visionary, entrepreneur, capitalist, craftsman, technician, political activist.

He deserves his face on a postage stamp IMO.

He did it knowing he'd annoy the people in the future that complained about everything made that wasn't pre CBS. It was a conspiracy! :P
