People just like to put things into neat little boxes, that's why there is genre labeling to begin with.

That Death In June vid made me think of what Rammstein would sound like if they wrote a song for Neil Young. Interesting mix of elements.

Rock isn't any better.
Better make sure that this guy plays in a post-punk band and not a post-punk revival band...

Genre .... a misappropriated 19th century french word relegated to an overused mispronounced cliche....

In french Genre is appropriated in the context of asking a question as in ....

" Quelle genre de travail ... ? " ( What type of work ) simply translated...
Genre also does not appropriately translate to the word style, more closely to the word type.
Style ( the word itself ) is fashion oriented, one would not ask what style of work do you perform... :? :?:

Also the (re) in Gen-re is silent, it is not pronounced like two separate words but just One...

Genre ..... Zhenr.... Yes the english use of Genre is irritating to say the least.....

I have a problem with that term because to me it implies that punk is dead, which The Exploited would strongly disagree with (see below), as would all the kids in the slam pit at many current-day punk shows.

No it doesn't. Learn how genre tags work.

The Exploited suck, and they are an abysmal example of a band keeping punk alive, since all they do is rehash the same sh*t.

Yea, it's kind of like post hardcore, which is awful for the majority.

We'd have to have Floyd The Barber in on this thread.

Now there's a "genre" where you could argue that it's NOT a genre. Generic Hot Topic bands are the same genre as Fugazi, who are the same genre as The Jesus Lizard, who are the same as Bear Vs. Shark, etc.. It's really stupid.

That said, for most of those bands, it's just a term for "punk that's a little different from punk". Fugazi is totally a punk band, but the term "punk" does absolutely no justice to what they play, same with TJL, and pretty much and "good post-hardcore".

It pretty much boils down to punk that's more than punk, "indie rock" (another "too-broad-to-be-a-genre" genre, incidentally) with a harder edge, or, more recently, terrible pop rock sold in Hot Topic.

"Post-punk" was a music scene in the UK back in the '80s. Some former punk rockers decided real punk was dead and moved on to post-punk. I had a roommate back in college who was really into it, so I wound up hearing a lot of Death in June and Current 93.

Death In June are more often considered neo-folk

good examples of post-punk would be Joy Division, Public Image Ltd., Devo, Talking Heads, etc

Personally, I just think it's a lazy way of not coming up with their own genre. I mean look at rock and roll. No one called it "post-blues." It's rock and roll, buddy!

Don't we have enough manufactured genres already, without making up more? You either like it or you don't.

The metal dudes are the worst. Oh, the popcorn sessions we've witnessed during the flame wars over whether something is Post-symphonic metal, or Orchestral progressive metal. It was a large bucket too.

People who make fun of metal genres often can't name any legitimate subgenres other than death metal and thrash. After that they usually go on some childish tangent of made up names to deflect from their own ignorance of the subject.

What I'm saying is, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Due to the sheer versatility and range of sounds that can be considered "electronic music", a lot of these are in fact very distinct genres. They may mostly seem like a crock, but even to the untrained ear, most would have glaring differences. Many are also less "genres", more grouping together artists from a specific scene, label or collective who play the same (already existing) genre, albeit with minute differences/characteristics distinct to that scene.

They went in the neo-folk direction, but Pearce and Wakeford had both been in the punk rock band Crisis, which still makes them post-punk.

Staying out of this. But desperately want to know how Siouxsie and the Banshees could be considered post punk when they're a 77 band.

...and Joy Division started in 76. So did The Cure. What are you getting at? Punk started with the Ramones. Siouxsie and The Banshees is a band that was formed out of influence from the punk scene. However, it musicially diverged from it. Siouxsie hung with The Pistols. Sid was the drummer at their first gig. Influence isn't a chronological thing in terms of one genre having to "end" before the next begins. It's a matter of influence and artistic difference. As I said, most bands that are considered Post-Punk had ties to the actual punk scene. However, they usually consisted of people influenced by them. The Dolls were active while the Ramones were still playing. Does that mean The Ramones weren't really punk? That's just silly. Post-Punk is a catch all way to identify bands that emerged after the initial onset of punk and what it did to the music industry. Which was return to it the spark that rock n' roll initially had. The list of Post-Punk bands is filled with bands that sound little alike. They all took that initial spark and headed in directions. Some became lumped into "Goth". The Banshees, The Cure, and the like. Go back and listen to that first Cure record. The punk influence is there. It still really is. Especially in Simon Gallup's basswork. That initial explosion of the first generation of punk. Which is really the only generation of punk. Was FAST. It's influence is still being felt to this day. Record companies wanted a way to capitalize on this movement without the stigma of "punk". So Post-Punk got carved up. The darker bands became "Goth" bands. The poppy upbeat synth bands, New Wave. All of which had their own subgenres eventually depending on how they wanted to market them. Then not to mention the industry created bands. The Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cure. That IS Post-Punk when you boil it down to it's roots.
