So, a friend of mine is in a band and they call their music "Post-Punk."

I have a problem with that term because to me it implies that punk is dead, which The Exploited would strongly disagree with (see below), as would all the kids in the slam pit at many current-day punk shows.

One of my friend's fans is saying that the term just means that the music came after punk, which is fine, but so did techno, house and a whole bunch of other genres, so by that definition, we could call rap "post-punk."

Personally, I just think it's a lazy way of not coming up with their own genre. I mean look at rock and roll. No one called it "post-blues." It's rock and roll, buddy!

Yea, it's kind of like post hardcore, which is awful for the majority.

We'd have to have Floyd The Barber in on this thread.

I guess you've never heard any hot topic bands. Generic 4/4, double bass, similar breakdown, girly vocals, chug chug, screech screech, drop d bands, specifically.

The music I love is loved because it moves me, not because it's a specific type of genre.

How can something be called post punk when punk never went away in the first place? In order for something to be classified as "post" it would have to follow something that had disappeared,so since punk has been with us in one form or another since its inception in the late 60s,post punk is just current punk that's 40 years after the first wave of punk-there's nothing post about it.

I think Frank has the answer I was looking for all along.

Genres? We don't need no stinking genres.

This will blow your mind, but there's post-rock too.

You can have both X and post-X at the same time, and you don't even have to pass through X to reach post-X. There are people with post-collegiate degrees that never went to college. Post-war movies don't mean there can't be war movies anymore. Post-modernism and modernism both exist.

"Post-punk" was a music scene in the UK back in the '80s. Some former punk rockers decided real punk was dead and moved on to post-punk. Some of it was experimental, and some of it was very dark folk-style music with apocalyptic lyrics. I had a roommate back in college who was really into it, so I wound up hearing a lot of Death in June and Current 93.

"Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me"

Not a song I would usually quote, but it seems fitting.

Post-punk was basically the bands that formed out of and after the punk scene. Some of them went on to be called Goth, some New Wave, some just didn't make it much farther. It was a late 70's early 80's thing. Siouxsie and The Banshees would be considered Post-Punk if that helps. That circle of bands. Early Cure. The Smiths. Some of whom are now considered Goth for the most part. The Synth bands who ended up being part of New Wave. A lot of bands who have direct ties to the Post-Punk genre also went on to become considered the first generation of "alternative" from the 80's. The Jesus and Mary Chain would be an example. Also, you sometimes hear early hipster style "indie" music being referred to as "post-punk". Elvis Costello's early work sometimes gets lumped in. As it was more of a transitional genre originally it's pretty hard to nail down. It's had quite a revival of late. Especially in the UK. Mainly mirroring the old Synth Pop blended with early Goth type stuff.

What your friend is playing is basically considered Post-hardcore. While hardcore grew out of the punk music scene. It really has little to do with that first generation of punk in terms of musical mechanics.

In the end, genres are things for the suits to worry about. Don't worry about what it's called. Just worry about if it moves you.

I agree, if it moves you it moves you. I used to get frustrated with trying to get other people to see something in a band i thought they didn't see... gave that up.

I also think Genres are in many ways created by musicians themselves. I highly doubt Garth Brooks decided he was so influenced by the Sex Pistols he was going to follow the musical path he did. That’s not to say he might not have some Sex Pistols in his collection, its just not the style of music he chose to persue. I’m not bothered at all by the use of Genre’s. I’m not into Country or Hip Hop so if I’m looking for something similar to my tastes I know I probably won’t find it in those sections. Again not to say I wouldn’t find something in those sections I like but it will point you in the right direction. Actually I think I'm more bothered by the word Genre now that i think about it... its kind of stupid word. Probably explains why i use the word style i suppose.

I don't know.

Don't we have enough manufactured genres already, without making up more? You either like it or you don't.

The metal dudes are the worst. Oh, the popcorn sessions we've witnessed during the flame wars over whether something is Post-symphonic metal, or Orchestral progressive metal. It was a large bucket too.
