For all the Fender related posts I've made over the years... I don't feel to bad saying that I need a little help with my Les Paul. The whole guitar was gutted and I started from scratch... I like the options but the hum is killin' me!

Here's the schematic I used... I followed it but also added wires from pot to pot. It was noisy so I added a wire from the volume pot to the inside of the cavity with a Fender style ground lug... just as noisy.

In any case, it's making a racket! Lots of hum... did I over ground it? I don't know if it's possible to do such a thing. I'm half tempted to clip all the pot to pot wires and see what happens... worse case, I'll just need to resolder them. Any suggestions?

Without seeing the guitar in front of me, any diagnosis is just guesswork. Clearly something's not grounded properly though. Maybe identify all the points you think should be grounded and check with your multimeter ... you do own a multimeter don't you? Of course you do, why am I asking.

Remember Seymour Duncan's wiring diagrams assume you're using SD pickups, the wiring colours may be different for Fender/Gibson/Brand X pickups.

Multimeter, I don't need no stinkin' multimeter! I do have one actually but I never use it... I'm OCD about drawing out schematics before I start soldering. Even the one I opted I redrew w/ colored pencils so it would look like it actually looks when looking at the control cavity. This has been the only really problematic wiring project I've had... hard to believe, especially given some of them that I've undertaken! I actually sorted out the problem after thinking about the schematic... seems I didn't follow it as closely as I thought. I didn't realize that the ground wires had to be grounded to the actual pots and not the little boxes on the push/pull part of the pots. I should have just popped the control plate off my other Les Paul and had a look-see... that one had factory push/pull knobs. Anyhow, it works like a charm now!

I actually used some Stew Mac Golden Age overwound humbuckers... they have the same color scheme as Duncans which is nice but I do have that nifty page with the brand to brand wire conversions... that thing is a lifesaver! Thanks again for chiming in GilgaFrank, had this solution not worked, I'd have been lost and needed to troubleshoot with you and the rest of the wiring gurus around here! Cheers, JG
