I know a kid that said he doesn't like Strats because too many people play them.

He plays a Les Paul.

A beginner who would buy a Gibson? Even the low-end Melody Makers are $380-$500. And besides, you wouldn't want to waste THAT much money on a hobby that the person may even reconsider and totally quit in the future.

To make a long story short- don't waste $1000+ on an instrument you're going to practice on, and risk possibly just give up on.

What a pathetic sales pitch. That is foolish way to build a customer base.

I am glad your daughter read through his B.S.

Re the salesperson:

All commision based salespersons end up acting like used car salesmen from time to time....when they really need the money.

I almost ended up buying a strat once, but just as I was paying for it I saw a huge chip in the paint that the sales guy was trying to cover up, so I took the money right back off the counter and left.

..The only thing i ever bought in that shop was a few pics, and even they snapped in half after a few days. Now that shop is closed, so that just shows what bad staff/attitude can do to a business.

As everyone else said, it was just an obvious ploy to try and get a higher commission on his part. I started with a squier. They're great guitars for a low budget for someone who isn't sure if guitar is right for them.
