Fender is having a contest similar to the NCAA basketball March Madness tourney: they have chosen a list of song favorites from the history of the Stratocaster, all of which feature guitar parts being played with Strats. They will put the songs in a big bracket and match two at a time against each other. The winners are determined by a series of online votes, with one song eventually being voted the best Stratocaster song of all time. You enter the contest by voting which song you think will prevail, and all those who pick the winning song will then be entered in a drawing to see who wins the grand prize, an American Standard Stratocaster.

You can find the entry form here: http://www.fender.com/strat-madness/

The list is quite extensive and varied, and covers the years 1956-2013, featuring everybody from Ike and Tina Turner to Nirvana to Hendrix to Daft Punk.

I'm not ashamed to admit I chose Layla. If there is any justice, it should go deep in the tourney. Anybody else have a favorite?

lots of great songs, im sure one of the most obvious songs will win, like comfortably numb or a Hendrix track. I nearly went for Cocaine, then I nearly went the arctic monkeys.

in the end I went for sultans of swing, because that's the strat sound.

Sultans of Swing was my pick too, everything you want from the strat.

There are a number of choices there that I would not have guessed were played on a Strat.

I'm leaning toward Misirlou or Wicked Games... but there are a bunch of very good possibilities.

I wonder if there's a national aspect to what we think of as the classic Strat sound? Our side of the pond, moochy, I'd have thought Apache would be it - certainly that's what Mark Knopfler would say. In North America... Buddy Holly? Ritchie Valens?

Meantime. Not what I voted for, but I bet Comfortably Numb ends up somewhere very close to the top of this ballot.

BTW: what guitar was Duane Allman playing on Layla, one of the "greatest songs ever to be played on a Strat". Might it have been his Les Paul...?

Cheers - C

The rational thing here is to figure out which song has the greatest chance of winning, and pick that even if you like other songs better.

My approach: People don't like long lists. So something near the top has a greater chance of winning. So pick the first song that you're fairly certain that most people know and either like or think is very stratty (right or wrong).

And if I'm fairly certain that this song will win, not post what I picked. Because I don't want even more competitors in the draw.

Haha - the few times I've ever entered lotteries I've worked on the basis you indicate. For starters, choose numbers higher than 31, because so many people base their choice on numbers from their date of birth. And choosing sequential patterns is a good strategy too, 41-42-43-etc say, because people instinctively and wrongly presume there is somehow less chance of those patterns coming up so avoid them, meaning that if you win you have little prospect of having to share the prize.

All good methods. And yet, here I am, still a non-lottery millionaire... :(

The trem is a key factor in choosing which song...I think?
